Al-Wilayah – Ahlan wa sahlan ya marhaba

In the Name of Allah, the Exalted!      

The highest level of education requires a psycho-spiritual approach which is based on a clear understanding of the nature of the human being, including the hierarchical structure and dynamics of the human consciousness and its key elements – spirit (ruh), heart (qalb), intellect (‘aql) and the self (ego) or soul (nafs).               

There are three different levels of nafs:               

- One of the nafs starts from the lowest level (ego: ‘the commanding self’, “an-nafs al-‘ammara” = the sinful soul, which is totally under the control of the passions and therefore blind to any other higher reality).               

And I do not declare myself free, most surely (man’s) self is wont to command (him to do) evil, except such as my Lord has had mercy on, surely my Lord is Forgiving, Merciful.
(Surah Yusuf (Chapter 12 – Joseph) verse 53)

- The other one is the intermediate stage of struggle (“an-nafs al-lawwama” = the nafs that blames).               

Nay, I swear by the accusing soul (that this Scripture is true).
(Surah Al-Qiyamah (Chapter 75 – The Resurrection) verse 2)

- The last is the highest stage (“an-nafs al-mutmainna” = the ‘self at peace’).               

(To the righteous soul will be said:) “O (thou) soul, in (complete) rest and satisfaction!
(Surah Al-Fajr (Chapter 89 – The Dawn) verse 27)

‘Ammara refers to the urge which commands man to do evil, but if he sincerely believes in Allah and resolves to do good at all events, Allah gives him power to control this urge and always keeps his conscience awake to safeguard himself against evil of Shaytan. The conscience which censures and holds in check the urge to do evil is called lawwama’ (Al Qiyamah 2). When he controls the ‘ammara, and abides by the dictates of lawwama’ he is blessed with peace of mind, joy and fulfilment and deserves to be called nafs mutmainna, the ultimate destination of which is that which has been promised in verse 8 of al-Bayyinah.

In other words, nafs al-lawwama, the self-reproaching conscience, feels conscious of evil the human soul is entangled with due to the promptings of nafs ammara which is prone to evil, and, if not checked and controlled by the self-reproaching conscience, leads to perdition. Lawwama prompts a person to resist the evil, and ask for Allah’s pardon and grace after repentance and making amends, with hope to reach salvation. Nafs mutmainna is the highest stage of tranquillity and satisfaction which is achieved when the human soul surrenders itself completely to the will of Allah.

Therefore the aim is become successful in avoiding sins and committing good deeds for a certain time and hence gradually acquiring the qualities of a believer by keeping his heart clean from black spots (more to come here below), i.e. that is to say to re-establish the luminosity of his heart. From the day when one is born until before the age of 11-12 years old (age of maturation) one still has a heart without any black spots (of sins) and the aim is to keep it the heart in such a state of purity and full of good thoughts and committed deeds.               

Here are some general advice used to ‘awaken’ oneself for the struggle against the commanding self:               

 It is in human nature to thank one who has been gracious. Reflect and estimate the seen and unseen favors bestowed on us by the Almighty. All of the creations of God could not even provide a fraction of such bounty. One has to be very thankful for being chosen to be born in a healthy condition (among others) by God Almighty. Thankfulness has to be repeated every day since God could instead have chosen for one to be born blind or even worse, paralyzed. Especially when one sees a handicapped person, or one with other health problems, he must ask God for thankfulness for the health He, the Creator, has chosen to give him; for He knows best.               

 Look at the air we breathe day and night, and upon which our existence as well as that of other living beings is dependent. Nothing can remain alive if it is deprived of such air for even a few minutes. Other creations such as anaerobic bacterias are of such that don’t need air for their survival. What a marvelous gift God has given to each on of his creations! He knows what’s best suited for their biological system.
We could have been chosen to be among the fetus that didn’t come out in this world and therefore not being those who breathe this air. Therefore one has to be very thankful to Allah, especially through the accomplishment of prayer (salat) and repentance (tawbah). Note that in Islam the prayer is considered to be the so-called backbone of the deen(religion). The reason is that on the Day of Judgment the first thing that one is judged upon (by God) is whether one has accomplished the prayers (salat) in this world; afterwards will other deeds be judged upon. Here is what Allah has to say to us about repentance:               

And most surely I am most Forgiving to him who repents and believes and does good, then continues to follow the right direction.
(Surah Ta-Ha (Chapter 20 – Ta-Ha) verse 82)

The thing that one has to observe in this verse is its last words ‘continues to follow the right direction’. This brings us to which path God is really talking about? It is foremost to perform the daily prayers that leads to the acceptance of these prayers from God and then He can forgive your repentance after you have asked for forgiveness during zikhr and tasbih.               

If all men of the world labored together to create such a gift (air, nature…), they could not do so. In the same way, reflect on other gifts of God such as the five external bodily senses of sight, hearing, taste, smell, and touch, and inner faculties such as thinking, imagination, and reason, each one of which carries unlimited benefits and which is granted to us by Our Lord. He is the Creator and King of this vast universe.
What does a human being see himself as thinking that he does not need to obey God’s laws, whereas the same person obeys the laws established by his country (supposedly written by men) and those given by his parents at home. Where did Allah’s laws go? Where could mankind get enough knowledge to establish laws in a country? Did they get it from their ancestors? What would then the aim of the prophet’s message be if mankind could come up with such wonderful laws by themselves?
The answer is that the entire knowledge on establishing laws in a society was first taught to Adam (AS) by God via the Holy Angels. All 124 000 prophets that were sent by God to mankind taught people how to behave in all manners personally in life and even collectively as individuals in a society. Notice that no one has the right to tell God on the Day of Judgment that he or his people (race) has not received a messenger from God:               

And certainly We raised in every nation a messenger saying: Serve Allah and shun the Shaitan. So there were some of them whom Allah guided and there were others against whom error was due; therefore travel in the land, then see what was the end of the rejecters.
(Surah An-Nahl (Chapter 16 – The Bee) verse 36)

It is thanks to these God-given laws (teachings) that we can struggle against our nafs(ego). Without the laws of God, from the (Original) Testaments (given at the times of the belonging prophets(AS)) and the Holy Quran (from the time of Prophet Mohammad(SAAS) till today), one would die at the end as a looser and moreover, societies after societies would be destroyed in the hands of men. By using the word ‘looser’ it is meant that one leaves this world by loosing Paradise where Hell awaits him. The destruction of societies is being seen today with our own eyes, through wars, poverty, prostitution, homicides… but still people today consider themselves as being more civilized than their ancestors, such as the Romans, the Vikings, the Goths, the Celts, etc. Is this really true?
Man considers himself egotistical, to be ‘something great and powerful’. Haven’t you noticed that as soon as you see a person from the 10th floor of a building he looks like a small ant? If you look at a person from the top of the Eiffel tour then he would look like a moving dot. Doesn’t mankind realize that he isn’t as strong and powerful as he thinks he is? He is nothing but what God has given him, nothing more and nothing less.
So why shouldn’t people obey their Lord? Allah asks mankind why they don’t pray to Him.                          

In the Holy Quran it is mentioned clearly that birds, trees, mountains and stars pray to their Lord. Maybe some of you have noticed that some birds ’sing’ (interpreted in our language) exactly when it is time for the first prayer of the day – the Fajr prayer, before the dawn. This might be, possibly to us, as an example of the way that birds do pray to God! They are not the only one who pray to God; it is all creatures that live on Earth and in the skies. This is what Allah tells us about them praying:               

Do you not see that Allah is He Whom do glorify all those who are in the heavens and the earth, and the (very) birds with expanded wings? He knows the prayer of each one and its glorification, and Allah is Cognizant of what they do.
(Surah Al-Nour (Chapter 24 – The Light) verse 41)

Notice here that Allah says that when birds extol Him they do it through their wings as opposed to what we though; hence, the knowledge of how each creature extols God is not fully revealed to us.
Here is an example from the Holy Quran on the Prophet Dawoud (David (AS)) and the mountains who together worship Allah (note: that was one of Dawoud’s (AS) many miracles(by Allah’s Will)):               

To Solomon We inspired the (right) understanding of the matter: to each (of them) We gave Judgment and Knowledge; it was Our power that made the hills and the birds celebrate Our praises, with David: it was We Who did (all these things).
(Surah Al-Anbiyah (Chapter 21 – The Prophets) verse 79)

Another example of praying is the easy observable changes that occur by the sun and the moon before the sunrise (the Fajr prayer) and the sunset (the Maghrib prayer). Therefore, mankind has to pray to His Lord at the same time, as far as how our intellect understand it. We cannot discuss on exactly why we have to pray on those times but judging from the natural phenomenon surrounding us why should we question the time of the prayer and avoid it?
Hence here is another verse from the Quran saying the following:               

The seven heavens declare His glory and the earth (too), and those who are in them; and there is not a single thing but glorifies Him with His praise, but you do not understand their glorification; surely He is Forbearing, Forgiving.
(Surah Al-Isra (Chapter 17 – The Journey by Night) verse 44)

Some might say that it is ‘Allah’ that ’causes’ these creatures, such as mountains, to extol Him. This is true for instance in the verse 21:79, since it is likely so that mountains extol Allah independently of humans. However, it is extremely important to not misinterpret this by concluding that mountains are not living creatures; only because Allah has stated in the verse 21 of chapter 79 that He ’causes’ or ‘made’ them to extol with Prophet David (AS). Mountains do pray (prostrate) before Allah, their Creator, as said in the following verse:               

Do you not see that Allah is He, Whom obeys whoever is in the heavens and whoever is in the earth, and the sun and the moon and the stars, and the mountains and the trees, and the animals and many of the people; and many there are against whom chastisement has become necessary; and whomsoever Allah abases, there is none who can make him honorable; surely Allah does what He pleases.
(Surah Al-Hajj (Chapter 22 – The Pilgrimage) verse 18)

As you can see everything that you see on this planet, other planets and solar system is alive; since they all extol God’s glory and praise. The capacity of the human brain is in a sense very limited to understand how these planets, stars, comets, mountains (21:79), etc. can be living creations. Some might argue that mountains (i.e. stones) cannot be living things, since their material is very hard, immobile and do not grow; but do the planets we know grow in size? No they don’t; hence those people’s argument is weak. Well what about the tree; do trees tend to move during their life-time? No it is stationary during its entire life, growing only upwards and its root inside the soil; therefore that argument is also weak.
Instead of continuing along this path let’s concentrate on the main issue by raising a question: has Allah revealed to us a verse that shows us that stones show signs of life?
The answer to this can be found in the following Quranic verse:               

Then, even after that, your hearts were hardened and became as rocks, or worse than rocks, for hardness. For indeed there are rocks from out which rivers gush, and indeed there are rocks which split asunder so that water floweth from them. And indeed there are rocks which fall down for the fear of Allah. Allah is not unaware of what ye do.
(Surah al-Baqarah (Chapter 2 – The Cow) verse 74)

As one can see this verse informs us on the fact that rocks are indeed alive.            

From a logical and scientific perspective, thus by using basic physics 101 or even chemistry 101, one learns why materials such as tree, human, stone, orange, etc… are hard or soft. During these two courses one learns that the more the atoms composing the material are structurally closer and tighter to one another the harder the resulting formed material becomes. That is the reason why a stone is much harder than a human bone; since the atoms that compose the human bones are much further from one another than the atoms composing the stone.
One factor that is important to observe about the stone (such as precious stones) is its change in color (can found in geological books or even online).
Color is the most obvious and attractive feature of gemstones (or precious stones). The color of any material is due to the nature of light itself. Daylight, often called white light, is actually a mixture of different colors of light. When light passes through a material, some of the light may be absorbed, while the rest passes through. The part that isn’t absorbed reaches our eye as white light minus the absorbed colors. A ruby appears red because it absorbs all the other colors of white light – blue, yellow, green, etc. – except red. This implies that it is actually not our eyes that see but rather the reflection of the light on, for example an apple (i.e. of the white light minus the absorbed light) that is being percieved.  Beyond stones, the point is that we are actually not seeing every existing thing that surrounds us visually-speaking; many things cannot be perceived by the human eye.
Using optic knowledge on physics one learns that everything reflecting light, which can be measured by a measurement of wavelength with the unit of nanometer (or nm) – note that a nanometer is one thousand-millionth of a meter. The human eye can only see reflected light (called visible light) that are comprised in the interval of 400 to 800 nm; here is a picture illustrating this.               

 So humans are actually missing a lot that is comprised in the unseen category. For example, when it comes to wavelengths that are outside the range of the visible light, such as infrared, the human eye can only see the heat that is being ejected from our body or the activity of a comet though special infrared cameras or satellites equipped with such cameras respectively.  
In another way, we cannot see the activity in our cells except while using an advanced microscope. So do we trust what our naked eyes see or what devices reveal to us on the small atomic world of stones? It has already been mentioned by the Creator of the stone and its activity or roll as well as of us humans (including what our eyes can see or not see).
Hence, here are examples on two pictures on well known stones that have two different characteristic (i.e. color that reach our eye):               

Sapphires

Beryl

This difference in color is based on the atomic structure of the stone. Although the different stones formally have the same chemical composition, they are not exactly the same. Every now and then an atom is replaced by a completely different atom (and this could be as few as one in a million atoms). These so called impurities are sufficient to absorb certain colors and leave the other colors unaffected.
As an example: beryl, which is colorless in its pure mineral form, becomes emerald with chromium impurities. If you add manganese instead of chromium, beryl becomes pink morganite. With iron, it becomes aquamarine.
The thing that one has to remark is that the processes that occur are chemical processes. Don’t chemical processes also occur in our human body at all time? Yes, then what is it that makes the stone lifeless instead of being a living thing? As you can see one has to reflect by applying knowledge to solve any kind of ignorance or misconceptions regarding this Quranic ideology (that everything is alive). As you can see stones changing color is a sign of life; as it is a sign of life when the tree grows in size even though it is stationary rooted into the ground and its leafs that change color depending on the season.
Some might argue further by saying that how can stones or mountains have a spirit? Well, the creature that we know most about is ourselves and yet we still haven’t discovered the location nor the nature of the spirit. So this argument that mountains or rocks cannot be living creatures is therefore weak?
The fact is that some geologists, such as French Arnold Rheshar and Pierre Escollet, have long studied rock specimens collected in different parts of the world. They arrived at quite an amazing conclusion in the end. They believed that stones have some kind of a vital activity though a very slow one. The geologists maintain the structure of stones is subject to changes, and stones can grow old. Moreover, the French claim stones can breathe, to a certain extent. Taking one “breath” takes them from three days to two weeks. And each of their “heartbeats” lasts about three days. These discoveries lead to the conclusion that stones should not be regarded as minerals anymore but rather as animals or creatures. The varying lengths of a shadow projected by any material object that depends on the position of the sun in relation to the earth; and since the earth’s rotation around the sun is – as everything else in the universe – an outcome of God’s creative will, the greater length of a shadow in the morning and evening and its contraction towards noon visibly expresses the shadow’s subjection to Him.
Moreover, here is what we find in a Quranic verse:               

Do they not consider every thing that Allah has created? Its (very) shadows return from right and left, making obeisance to Allah while they are in utter abasement.
(Surah An-Nahl (Chapter 16 – The Bee) verse 48)

               

And unto Allah maketh prostration whatsoever is in the heavens and whatsoever is in the earth of living creatures, and the angels (also) and they are not proud.
(Surah An-Nahl (Chapter 16 – The Bee) verse 49)

               

The believers and the angels prostrate before Allah by their own free will to acknowledge the supreme authority of their Lord. All other creations cast their shadows to the right and the left to prostrate before Allah in all humbleness. Though outwardly the disbelievers do not prostrate before Allah, yet their native nature obeys the Creator-Lord of the worlds and one day they will meet the natural end of life, howsoever they may try to avoid it.
Thus, the shadow that belongs to our existence prostrates for Allah and the Angels prostrate for God, so why shouldn’t we do the same? Are we human superior to the Holy Angels? Well, no not at all. Here is a Tradition from the Holy Prophet Muhammad (SAAS) from the book called Sayings of the Prophet Muhammad, a book on selected Traditions by Shaykh Fadhlalla Haeri:
The Prophet often stood in prayer for so long that the skin of his feet would crack. One of his wives asked, “Why do you do this when your past and future wrong actions have been forgiven?” He replied, “Should I not be a grateful servant of God?”               

Hence, with the intellect that God has given us (knowing that “all things and beings that are in the heavens and on earth worship Him”) why shouldn’t we chose to enrich our soul by carrying out good deeds (including praying to Allah) in this world in order to carry with us these performed deeds to the afterlife? These deeds are the only thing that we can carry to the hereafter; everything else is left behind in this world, such as our cloths, our money and even our status. It is these deeds that permit you to enter in the eternal Paradise that is promised to such people in the Holy Quran. Just look at yourself when you desperately want to enter into university by getting the best possible grades. What about the eternal life that comes after? Therefore, consider the good deeds as your passport (good grades) required for entering to the eternal Paradise whereas the bad deeds as your passport (bad grades) leading to the entrance of the eternal Hell. This is an example of what God means by being the Righteous (or Just). One earns, the Paradise or the Hell, depending on the grade obtained through the deeds performed in this world. At the Day of Judgment no (ordinary) man can give some of his good deeds to someone else and no one is a judge except God, the Judge Himself; or else unfairness would result. The only ones who could give credits to others are the last Prophet Mohammad(SAAS) as well as the Ahlulbayt (AS), who all are given the ability to perform intercession (by the Will of Allah) for other believers, who in turn have accepted them and followed their divine Path during this life-time.
Some people might regard the Islamic way of praying (salat) as strange and unnecessary. There are two distinguishing positions (in the salat) that are included in the salat (Islamic prayer): one is the bowing  and the other one is the prostration. The bowing means the physical submission to God, our Creator. The prostration has at least two general meanings: one that it stands for the fact that we (humans) come from the Earth’s material (namely from clay of molded mud) and shall return to it after death – i.e. our body (composed of flesh and bones) will be decomposed to atoms and organic molecules and return to the soil as nutrition (thus returning into the food cycle); which is why humbleness is an extremely important attribute. Here is the verse that says from what type of material God created the human physical body with:               

And when your Lord said to the angels: Surely I am going to create a mortal of the essence of black mud fashioned in shape (i.e. out of clay of molded mud).
(Surah Al-Hijr (Chapter 15 – The Rocky Tract) verse 28)

               

               

Note here that it is only the material of our body that is sent back to the soil after our death whereas our spirit (so called ruh) is separated from our body just at the death-occurrence by the Holy Angel of Death (called Malek’al-Mowt):               

It is Allah Who causeth the seed-grain and the date-stone to split and sprout. He causeth the living to issue from the dead, and He is the one to cause the dead to issue from the living. That is Allah: then how are ye deluded away from the truth?
(Surah Al-An’am (Chapter 6 – The Cattle) verse 95)

               

               

The other meaning of prostration is what Imam Ali(AS) said:           

“If a prayerful person knew to what extent he was surrounded by His Mercy, he would never raise his head from (the state of) prostration.”
(Tasnif-i-Qurar-ul-Hikam, p. 175)           

So to truly perform good deeds doesn’t mean to just pray and repent; it also means to live as a righteous citizen in a society and carry out the correct daily deeds, for instance such as working and even studying. Even by working (by first taking the prayer into account) one gets rewarded by God on the Day of Judgment. As an example, you work hard to (financially) support your wife and children and therefore will be later rewarded by God. Notice that the top option to attain righteous guidance and success in this life as in the next is to put the prayer and repentance on top of the list of the daily performing good deeds. The most important thing to do while carrying out such good actions is to do them with good and clean intent (nie) (by having sincerity (ikhlas)) so that God fully accepts your deeds and records them in your Book of Deeds; since God takes everything into account (more on this later). Here is what Allah says on this in his Own Words:               

Whoever does good whether male or female and he is a believer, We will most certainly make him live a happy life, and We will most certainly give them their reward for the best of what they did.
(Surah An-Nahl (Chapter 16 – The Bee) verse 97)

               

               

Some might not take the performance of good deeds serious enough by drawing the following conclusion, for instance: “How much will I possibly be rewarded if I give money to a poor except making him/her happy”.
Well here is a description on how much God rewards someone:               

The parable of those who spend their property in the way of Allah is as the parable of a grain growing seven ears (with) a hundred grains in every ear; and Allah multiplies for whom He pleases; and Allah is Ample-giving, Knowing.
(Surah Al-Baqarah (Chapter 2 – The Cow) verse 261)

               

               

Let’s put it this verse into figures to show how Allah is the (Most) Generous One(al-Karim). For every good deed (performed with good clean intent – in order for it to be accepted by God), such as giving one single dollar to a poor, God will reward him/her with 700 dollars! Hence investing in faith – through righteous deeds – is the best way to invest for ones after life. Not a single bank on earth rewards one better than God does; by taking into account the fact that bank investments do not guarantee (reward) any Paradise except money in this life, which is eventually lost eternally after death!
The case of giving away money is brought here since God knows exactly what people love most. That is the reason why in Islam it is taught that one should preferably give something that oneself likes rather that one doesn’t like. For example, I might have two shirts; a blue one that I like and wear everyday while the other that I don’t like and never wear. Therefore I should give away the blue shirt, which I usually wear, to a poor instead of the other one in order to fully get rewarded by God Almighty. Hence, the Holy Quran says the following:               

By no means shall you attain to righteousness until you spend (benevolently) out of what you love; and whatever thing you spend, Allah surely knows it.
(Surah Al-Imran (Chapter 3 – The Family of Imran) verse 92)

               

               

Note that in order to get even more reward while giving someone a hand, money, clothes, etc. one has to try giving secretly instead of publicly, as the Holy Quran says:               

Allah sets forth a parable: (consider) a slave, the property of another, (who) has no power over anything, and one whom We have granted from Ourselves a goodly sustenance so he spends from it secretly and openly; are the two alike? (All) praise is due to Allah! Nay, most of them do not know.
(Surah An-Nahl (Chapter 16 – The Bee) verse 75)

                              

An interesting part here is the psychological effect that one receives while giving away something publicly. After having done such a good deed one starts feeling a sensation of inner pleasure; but beyond that one sometimes start to feel that too proud or arrogant. This (arrogance) is one of the many problems that often occur if one applies the sayings of this verse publicly rather than in secrecy. Sobhan Allah! (May God be praised!), Allah is fully aware of the human psychology which is another proof (for those aren’t convinced) that He is the Creator of makind!               

The real question is how just God is during the Day of Judgment. Will he for example “miss” the recording of some of our committed actions (in our book of deeds)? Here is what Allah has to say about his justice:               

We shall set up scales of justice for the Day of Judgment, so that not a soul will be dealt with unjustly in the least, and if there be (no more than) the weight of a mustard seed, We will bring it (to account): and enough are We to take account.
(Surah Al-Anbiya (Chapter 21 – The Prophets) verse 47)

                              

Now that’s called ‘pure’ justice, the kind that is not found from west to east in this world!               

Unfortunately, as true as it might seem, the human being, a creature crawling on one of the smallest planets miserably fails to grab the extent of his own small world, whose sun cannot even be compared with far greater suns of numerous galaxies. Our solar system is nothing compared to apparently several other solar systems, which still elude the powerful telescopes of great explorers and investigators.
Look at the human brain – what a fascinating creation it is! One of the first scientists who discovered the true power of the human brain was Benyamin Libet, whose work is very interesting, especially regarding the human brain function (“Unconscious cerebral initiative and the role of conscious will in voluntary action,” Behavioral and Brain Sciences, 1985, 529-566). According to most neurologists mankind won’t even reach half the brain knowledge in even 30 years from now. Wow, Sobhan Allah! (May God Be Praised!), that a creation! This is said even though scientists discover twice the information about a cell’s structure and function every six to seven years, according to the book Human Anatomy by Marieb. Yet, one can still see that this knowledge gathered isn’t enough for scientists to create a single cell. Can the combined efforts of all human beings make even a single living neuron (brain cell) that Almighty God has created and creates all the time? Surely this God-given brain deserves to be solely the seat of divinely inspired good ideas and not evil thoughts and therefore used to save and perform good actions that only we are responsible for!               

 Every living being in this Universe is within the range of His divine vision, so remember God and all His favors, and don’t disobey Him. He is closer to you than your jugular vein is to you (Holy Quran 50:16). In other words, nothing (secret) can be kept away from your Creator.
He fulfils all our needs without having any need of our adoration. Whether you observe His commands or transgress them makes no difference ‘to Him’. It is for the sake of ‘our own benefit’ that He has enjoined good and forbidden indecency. In other words, performing the prayer doesn’t affect God at all since it is not God who needs you or your prayer; your prayer is meant for yourself (for your own good) however it is prayed to God. So throw satanic ideas and convert the spheres of your mind into divine realm by driving out the evil forces and inviting the divine hosts, so that God may help and protect you in the dangers threatening to befall you in this battle. Do not have any expectations from anyone but God. With all humility and all the tears your eyes can offer, pray to God and seek His assistance to emerge victorious in this crucial battle against the self (ego).
In some verses of the Quran is it stated that this world is only a test for people.
Have you ever wondered what the purpose of us living is? Well, here is the answer repeated in many different verses of the Holy Quran:               

That which is on earth we have made but as a glittering show for the earth, in order that We may test them – as to which of them are best in conduct.
(Surah Al-Kahf (Chapter 18 – The Cave) verse 7)

                              

 

Who created death and life that He may try you– which of you is best in deeds; and He is the Mighty, the Forgiving,
(Surah Al-Mulk (Chapter 67 – Dominion) verse 2)

                              

Every soul must taste of death and We try you by evil and good by way of probation; and to Us you shall be brought back.
(Surah Al-Anbiya (Chapter 21 – The Prophets) verse 35)

                              

Verily in this there are Signs (for men to understand); (thus) do We try (men).
(Surah Al-Mu’minun (Chapter 23 – The Believers) verse 30)

                              

 

And He it is Who created the heavens and the earth in six Days– and His dominion (extends) on the water– that He might manifest to you, which of you is best in action, and if you say, surely you shall be raised up after death, those who disbelieve would certainly say: This is nothing but clear magic.
(Surah Hud (Chapter 11 – The Prophet Hud) verse 7)

                              

Beyond the Quran, this is what Imam Ali (AS) says about this issue:               

Beware ! surely this world is a place from which protection cannot be sought except while one is in it. The action which is performed only for this world cannot secure salvation. People are tested in it through calamities. Those who have taken worldly pleasures here will be taken out from them (by death) and will be questioned about them. And whatever (good actions) they have achieved for the other world, they will get them there and stay in them. For the intelligent this world is like the shade – one moment it is spread out and extended but soon it shrinks and contracts.
(Sermon #63 - Nahj al-Balaghah and Al-’Amidi, Ghurar, under inna, 10, 88, 199.)               

Hence nothing that one owns or wears will be taken to the after world. Even our status (such as being a lawyer, judge, king, doctor…) is left behind in this world, since on the Day of Judgment each one of us is placed in a particular row as God’s servants and not as a king or a judge. Note that in Islam no human is the servant or slave of another. The fact is that we (even prophets) are the servants of God is stated in the following verses: 14:11, 17:65, 19:2, 19:30, and many more. Here is an example:               

There is no one in the heavens and the earth but will come to the Beneficent Allah as a servant.
(Surah Maryam (Chapter 19 – Mary) verses 93)

Imam Ali (AS), the first Imam said the following regarding the Day of Judgment:               

“If someone’s deeds lower his position, his pedigree (family background) cannot elevate it”.
(Nahj al-Balaghah, saying #22)               

This is referred to as on the Day of Judgment. For example, someone who has been sentenced to hell cannot be forgiven even if he was a powerful king in this world. As you can see Allah is the most Righteous Judge!
So the control of the ego is the heart of the success in this world and for the after world; this is what the first Imam Ali (AS) said:               

“One who struggles against himself so as to obey God, in the eyes of God, his station is that of a pious martyr.”
(Al-Amidi, Ghurar ul Hikam wa Durar ul Kalim, hadith #3546)               

Here is what God has told us in the Holy Quran:               

And the soul and Him Who made it perfect,

                              

 

And inspired it (with conscience of) what is wrong for it and (what is) right for it;

                              

.

 

He will indeed be successful who purifies it,
(Surah Ash-Shams (Chapter 91 – The Sun) verses 7-9)

This is what the sixth Imam Ja’far Sadiq (AS) said:               

“The Prophet (s) of God dispatched (sent) a contingent (group) of the army (to the battlefront). Upon their (successful) return, he (s) said: ‘Blessed are those who have performed the minor jihad and have yet to perform the major jihad.’ When asked, ‘What is the major jihad?’ the Prophet (s) replied: ‘The jihad of the self (struggle against self)’”.
(Al-Majlisi, Bihar al-Anwar, vol. 19, p. 182, hadith no. 31)               

Hence, one can notice from this original source that the way that the word jihad is being interpreted nowadays by non-Moslems (as well as by some ignorant Muslims) around the world does not mean to wage war; instead, this word has other more important interpretations. Every good thing that is compulsory to do in Islam is considered as jihad, such as to pray for God, help the poor, study at university, work, respecting and obeying parents *, reading Quran, educate and raise children, including as mentioned in this context above to struggle against ones ego. These are the real definitions of the word jihad, where its core is to struggle against ones ego. The word jihad, used in the media, is only one interpretation of the many meanings that it possesses. However, the terrorism that has been seen around the world including in the US and UK is not an act of jihad, since in order to apply jihad there are many rules that must be followed. Some of these rules of jihad are to not kill innocent people during battle, not to cut down trees and other life-forms that have nothing to do with the battle, not commit suicide (Holy Quran 4:29) – this is prohibited even in ordinary life, i.e. this is one of the worse kind of sin in Islam – and at last that the battle should be only on self-defense and not starting a war (Holy Quran 2:191). As one remarks many of the “Islamic” groups that claim to be Muslims are in fact not Muslims but are instead destroying the name and worth of the religion Islam by committing illegal, inhuman and anti-Quranic acts towards other nations and ethnic groups under the disguise of Islam. If a bit of research would be done then readers would realize that most of the so-called ”Muslims” shown in the western media belong to some sects such as wahhabists, Salafists, among others, which only has existed for some 300 years; whereas Islam came 1500 years ago! Thus, the Holy Quran  prohibits any kind of killing, in the strongest terms:          

For this reason did We prescribe to the children of Israel that whoever slays a soul, unless it be for manslaughter or for mischief in the land, it is as though he slew all men; and whoever keeps it alive, it is as though he kept alive all men; and certainly Our messengers came to them with clear arguments, but even after that many of them certainly act extravagantly in the land.
(Surah Al-Ma’ida (Chapter 5 – The Table Spread) verses 32)

         

Here is what Allah has said about parents:               

And your Lord has commanded that you shall not serve (any) but Him, and goodness to your parents. If either or both of them reach old age with you, say not to them (so much as) “Ugh” nor chide them, and speak to them a generous word.
(Surah Al-Isra (Chapter 17 – The Journey by Night) verses 23)

       And make yourself submissively gentle to them with compassion, and say: O my Lord! have compassion on them, as they brought me up (when I was) little.
(Surah Al-Isra (Chapter 17 – The Journey by Night) verses 24)

               

So the respect and obedience that everyone has to have towards parents is as if one is applying a verse from the Holy Book and thus gets rewarded by God on the Day of Judgment.        

Purifying the soul simply by controlling our ego do not work; it is mainly the prayer that has to be fulfilled so that one would become successful. Every prayer erases one’s sins and at the same time illuminates one’s heart so that one’s heart could eject positive thought to our brain, so that it, in turn, can help the person take wiser decisions based on amr bil ma’roof (performing good deeds) and nahi anil monkar (avoiding bad actions).
We have explained very briefly the physical signification of the prayer but not the spiritual. It should be known that one of the core aims of the prayer is to open a direct contact with our Absolute Superior, the one who created us, thus our Creator Allah. This contact is done by establishing private communication channel to directly speak to Him. Hence it is the prayer that represents the connectiveness with Allah. Of course one can speak to Allah and He can hear you at all times but the Salat is the best environment to do so and therefore compulsory.
How is love detected? How do you know if you love someone?
The first way is to think of her, depending on your attachment to the person. Let’s taken the example of a man and his wife. When the love is intense you start imagine yourself talking to her through thoughts.
Secondly you can’t wait to meet your love to tell her how much you miss her.
In other words, two things are important: the remembrance (mentally speaking) and the communication in order to increase and especially to make the worth of your love heard by her.
Consider the following. Why do you use a mobile phone (or cell phone) to solve this issue? Its use is to talk privately with your love. There are even other ways to do so, such as text message, email, chat, etc. All these methods are used to establish a contact with your love. Hence this is what Allah said to the Prophet Moses (AS):        

Surely I am Allah, there is no god but I, therefore serve Me and keep up prayer for My remembrance:
(Surah Ta-Ha (Chapter 20 – The Sun) verse 14)

      

As you have noticed it is this remembrance (i.e. in Allah, through prayer and thoughts) that inspires your success, brings you happiness in this life and makes you optimistic and forward-looking. One can reflect on how Allah has organized the system of our body in detail and order. The human body-system is indeed a perfect creation; especially when the science of the prefrontal cortex (http://heartscience.wordpress.com/2008/09/12/naseyah/) is analyzed in deep scale and yet not being fully understood by mankind even though we used highly sophisticated modern medical devices. Sobhan Allah (May God be praised)! Some might say, how can I become successful if I pray FIVE TIMES a day? Well the truth is revealed by Allah in the following verse:      

And when your Lord made it known: If you are grateful, I would certainly give to you more, and if you are ungrateful, My chastisement is truly severe.
(Surah Ibrahim (Chapter 14 – Abraham) verse 7)

      

Thus God gives you more if you show thankfulness. The Salat itself is a form of thankfulness besides being foremost an obligation, which leads to a great taqwa and success in life as a compensation in this world as part of His Rahma. Allah could have made an individual handicapped and hence making it impossible for the person to pray; thus show your thankfulness through good actions and not simply by the tongue. Beyond the fact that Allah gives you more He also gives you something unique that is usually unexpected by most people:      

On those who believe and work deeds of righteousness, will (Allah) Most Gracious bestow love.
(Surah Maryam (Chapter 19 – Mary) verse 96)

      

Hence, after attaining faith (iman) and performing righteous deeds with open heart, one will receive the Unique Love (of God). So a bilateral (2-way) love relation does occur between believers and their Creator, God.      

Have you ever wondered what happens when your love (wife or husband) leaves you or travels away? You will feel down and shattered, since the one who empowered you is missing in your life. Hence remember always Allah. Nowadays we have many social and mental ills. In order to heal these (mostly psychological) illnesses one has to accomplish the prayer (salat) and even read the Holy Quran with an open heart (good and clean intent). By doing so one should seek for help and guidance from the One and Only God alone:      

And We reveal of the Quran that which is a healing and a mercy to the believers, and it adds only to the perdition of the unjust.
(Surah Al-Isra (Chapter 17 – The Journey by Night) verse 82)

      

The word ‘believers’ refers here to those who have faith (and believe) in the fact that Allah can reach out to them for help and guidance. Hence prayer refreshes your soul while reading the Quran makes the individual remember Allah (more and more often) in order to become more on alert against the whisperings of Satan so that a spiritual purification given by Allah can ‘still’ be active in the human biological system. Those who get the most benefit from the prayer are those performing them rightfully in humbleness and absolute servitude:      

Successful indeed are the believers,
(Surah Al-Mu’minun (Chapter 23 – The Believers) verse 1)

      

Who are humble in their prayers,
(Surah Al-Mu’minun (Chapter 23 – The Believers) verse 2)

      

Here is a very powerful saying from the Holy Prophet Mohammed (SAAS) on the importance of prayer:      

“If you just realize how much bounties and blessings of Allah is going to overwhelm you when you put your forehead on dust in the state of prostration you would never raise your head (i.e. you would stay there)”.      

It is important to give as an example from the Quran on the way that one has to supplicate God to acquire full guidance. The example is from what the Companions of the Cave said; here is the Quranic verse:      

Or dost thou reflect that the Companions of the Cave and of the Inscription were wonders among Our Sign?
(Surah Al-Kahf (Chapter 18 – The Cave) verse 9)

      

When the young men fled for refuge to the Cave and said: Our Lord! Give us mercy from Thy presence, and shape for us right conduct in our plight.
(Surah Al-Kahf (Chapter 18 – The Cave) verse 10)

      

Hence, one has to ask for God’s mercy and for Him to guide us by making our life easier for us; in other words, beg God to navigate our life for us. The only way and reason that Allah will do so is that we give Him what He has asked from us – that is the salat (prayer) and of course other obligations that makes us continue towards the perfect straight right path (as mentioned in 1:1-7) to become a true believer of Allah. Here is a sermon of Imam Ali on the qualities of a true believer:      

He (the believer) kept his mind alive and killed (the desires of) his heart till his body became thin, his bulk turned light and an effulgence of extreme brightness shone for him. It lighted the way for him and took him on the (right) path. Different doors led him to the door of safety and the place of (his permanent) stay. His feet, balancing his body became fixed in the position of safety and comfort, because he kept his heart (in good acts) and pleased his Allah.

Before moving on I would like to add that besides for the prayer one can get guidance from the studying of the Holy Quran. Reading the Quran has many benefits; here are some of them:      

- You will learn on the science of the Quran which you can find plenty of in this blog and much more to be added. Adding such scientific facts and theories from Islam is meant to make the reader independant of the author of the HeartScience Center in such a way that the reader would see and experience the mysteries and miracles of the Holy Quran by himself.
- The history of the various prophets will be mentioned, which you can use as a lesson in order to avoid problems and confusions in life
- Learn moral values from the history of the prophets and others so that you can use them to free your mind (prefrontal cortex) and your heart from evil whisperings so that you could veto to (perform) good deeds and avoid committing sins in life.  
- and much more.

 ~ Section 2.3.4.2. The Struggle Again the Self - coming next week God-Willing! ~

I hope that you have now acquired the medical basics required to understand some of the information that is to be revealed on how to successfully control your ego, biologically speaking; and not necessarily only spiritually which is often descibed in most islamic websites (without mentioning the scientific phenomenons involved). I have my deepest respect for the spirituality but in today’s modern “computer-world” most people believe that worshiping God on a daily basis without any psychological distraction from their environment is impossible. Therefore, the present basics and hopefuly the advancements of Islamic medicine will be used (God-Willing) as an extra tool to tacle this situation so that mankind kan liberate himself from the ”24/7″ temptations (psychological distractions) of our world not allowing us to spend just a few minutes a day to update our Allah (God)-human connectivity as the rest of the creatures in nature do with their Creator. One of the reasons why I will correlate some scientific facts with spirituality is for people to use their intellect (reason) which will help their emotional intelligence (EQ from our heart) to feel the effect of spirituality through understanding (and hence acquiring divine Love) rather than simply applying the practices (through strictness). The content of this topic will be revealed through the three articles (2.3.4.1./2.3.4.2. & 2.3.4.3.). After having read these articles one would understant th real reasons for why one should seek spirituality and what sprituality (or mysticism) really is. Through these articles we’ll learn that irfan(or mysticism) it isn’t just a philosophical notion, it has many scientific root even though that most are unknown to us due to the complicated branches of science that we haven’t enough knowledge on such as bioelectromagnetism and quantum mechanics (and its involvement in biological systems).

Therefore in order for readers to fully trust the originality of this post I’ve  taken alot of the basics on what ego is and in Islam from the well-known and respected Imam Ruhollah Musavi Khomeini (RA). But before that some basics are required to understand what spirituality is (section 2.3.4.1.) and why one should accept its existence if one is willing to apply the steps of heart-purification. Later, after having read the Quran and many Islamic sayings I’ve added alot of extra information to enrich the sayings of Imam Khomeini (RA) through many Quranic verses, ahadith (Islamic sayings) and even my collected scientific facts related to some of these (section 2.3.4.2.). This does not imply that Imam Khomeini’s (RA) sayings are not enough nor that my information somehow ‘completes’ his, not at all; instead, it is simply for readers, Muslims, non-Shia Muslims and even non-Muslims, to understand the real status of Imam Khomeini’s (RA) knowledge through a logic and scientific perspective, which leads us to the fact that it is simply a confirmation of many of the Quranic verses and Ahadith from the 12 Imams (Peace be upon them) and not his own personal path or point of view.         

And at last the importance of some moral traits (section 2.3.4.3.), which a true servant of God should have, will be described along with the previousely given medical facts concerning the physiology of the human brain and the different ways ego is affected in order to become successful in resisting the whisperings of satan and therefore to attain a spiritual perfection (a clean heart).

In the Name of Allah – the Exalted! 

Introduction: 

We verily created man and We know what his soul whispereth to him, and We are nearer to him than his jugular vein.
(Surah Qaaf (Chapter 50 – Qaaf) verse 16)

And when My servants ask you concerning Me, then surely I am very near; I answer the prayer of the suppliant when he calls on Me, so they should answer My call and believe in Me that they may walk in the right way.
(Surah Al-Baqarah (Chapter 2 – The Cow) verse 186)

Yet have you ever wondered why many of our supplications are not answered by Allah (SWT)? 

This is a typical question that involves us all whoever we might be. 

Let us take the example on the relation between a man and a wife. When the wife travels away under a certain period her husband will miss her and then think about her often. The man will try to reach her by phone (or any other means of communication). As soon as he starts talking to her he asks her how she is doing and expresses his yearning for her. If they are not a happy couple then she might give him a harsh reply which would lead to a tiff. However, if they are a happy couple then they would more likely have a nice and warm phone conversation. 

The relationship between a man and his wife can be compared to that of a human being and his Lord – Allah (SWT). Even though the Creator of mankind (God) is invisible He has sent prophets after prophets to teach humans how to communicate with the Lord of the Universe. 

Among all the divine teaching (provided though the holy prophets (A.S.)) the most important one is the Salat (prayer), which is the heart (core) of the religion and of course one of the pillars of Islam. 

Criterias: 

If we wish to get our supplications realized by our Lord then there are certain criterias that we have to fulfill: 

1.  In order to have the supplications answered, first of all one should strive for the purification of the mind and soul, be repentant over (past) sins (and never repeat them again), embark upon construction and development of the self and seek inspiration from the lives of divine leaders by reaching the Divine Goal in life. These leaders can be Holy Prophet (SAAS) and the infallible Imams (AS) or even other people who carried out positive and revolutionary reforms in their own live as well as to their surrounding, such as Imam Khomeini (RA). 

It has been reported that Imam Sadiq (peace be upon him) said: 

Let it never be that any of you seeks a thing from God except that he first praises and glorifies Him, sends salutations upon the Holy Prophet (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) and his holy progeny, confesses to his sins and exhibits repentance over them; after having done these, he should then seek his desire from Him.
(Safinah al-Bihaar, vol. 1, pg. 448, 449.)
 

2. Endeavoring to have a pure life, free from usurped riches, oppression and injustice, and to refrain from acquiring one’s livelihood by illegal means, is the second step that must be taken. 

It has been reported that the Holy Prophet (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) said: 

One, who desires to have his supplications answered, should purify his food and earnings.
(Safinah al-Bihaar, vol. 1, pg. 448, 449.)

3. Followed by this one should not desist from combating evil and inviting others towards God. 

This is because the supplications of those, who forsake ‘enjoining the good (amr bil ma’roof) and forbidding the evil (nahi anil monkar)’, are not answered. 

The Holy Prophet (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) has said: 

You must enjoin the good and forbid the evil or else God will cause the evil ones to prevail over the righteous ones from amongst you, and however much they may pray, (their prayers) shall not be answered!
(Safinah al-Bihaar, vol. 1, pg. 448, 449.) 

In fact, abandoning this great duty of ‘national supervision’ leads to turmoil within the society as a result of which the society would be left open for the evil ones; (when this happens) supplications for the elimination of the consequences arising out of this state would be futile since this state has resulted out of man’s own deeds.

4. Acting in accordance with divine covenants. 

Faith, good deeds, trustworthiness, and righteousness, (collectively) form another of the conditions for the acceptance of prayers. This is because one, who is not faithful to his pledge with respect to God, should not expect God’s promise, of answering a supplicant, to be true for him too. 

A person once, complaining to Imam Ali (peace be upon him) about his supplications not being answered, said: 

“Despite the fact that God has said “Call upon Me, I will answer you”, why is it that when we supplicate to him, He does not answer our prayers?” 

The Imam (AS) said: 

Your thoughts [hearts and minds] have been unfaithful with respect to eight things (and this is the reason your supplications go unanswered) 

1- You have acquired the cognizance of God but you do not fulfill what is due to Him; consequently your cognizance of Him has not benefited your state! 

2- You have brought faith upon His Messenger but (later) went on to oppose his customs; where then is the yield of your faith?  

3- You have read His book but have not acted upon it; you stated: “We have heard and we obey”, but then rose up in opposition to it! 

4- You say: “We fear God’s punishment”, but perpetually perform acts that lead you closer to it. 

5- You claim to be covetous of God’s reward however you continue to perform acts that lead you away from it. 

6- You consume God’s bounties but do not extend thanksgivings to Him. 

7- You have been ordered to be Shaitaan’s enemy (whereas you sketch plans to befriend him); you claim to be his enemy but, in practice, you do not oppose him. 

8- You place into great scrutiny the faults of others but conveniently disregard your own; with such a state of affairs, how do you expect your prayers to be answered when you yourself have shut its doors? Be pious, rectify your deeds and enjoin the good and forbid the evil so that your prayers are answered.
(Safinah al-Bihaar, vol. 1, pg. 448.) 

This meaningful tradition (by Imam Ali(AS)) explicitly states: God’s promise to answer the supplications of a supplicant is not absolute, but conditional – the condition being that you should fulfill your own pledges and covenants; however the reality is that you have broken your pledge by eight ways. If you were to put an end to these, your prayers shall be answered, inshaAllah.

5. Another condition for the acceptance of one’s prayers is to conjoin it with efforts, hard work and activity. 

In one of the short sayings of Imam Ali (peace be upon him) we read: 

A supplicant (who prays) without effort and endeavor is like an archer without a bowstring! 
(Nahjul Balaghah, short sayings 337) 

In view of the fact that the bowstring is a means to propel the arrow towards the target, the influence of ‘effort’ in the effectiveness of dua’ becomes plainly manifest.

The diverse situations concerning dua: 

Yet, knowing and accepting everything given above, a brother once asked me the following question: 

“I have seen many people’s supplications go unanswered even though they applied all these eight criterias with piousness and even the other steps raised. So what is the reason now for not getting their supplications answered?” 

Since we haven’t yet covered the details answering the question above we will move on and answer the question accordingly, inshaAllah. 

In order to understand the result of our supplication we will have to separate it into three situations (maslahat): 

1. Allah will give whether we ask for it or not 

This situation indicates one of God’s Attributes – Allah’s Rahma (Compassion). Here we are talking about things that we usually never thank for, such as our good health (which He as given us), a normal working aql (intellect), good parents, good upbringing, etc.

2. He will not give whether we ask or not. 

What does this mean? Since Allah is All-Knowing, He knows that what the pleading person is asking for is not meant for him and because it isn’t good for him Allah will not answer this supplication. This is a part of the question that was raised by the brother. 

An example on this could be an individual who supplicates to Allah to become a leader to help people and restore justice and eradicate corruption in a society. This is a typical example on how Allah usually doesn’t realize one’s dua. 

Now this person might conclude that God isn’t Compassionate. Wrong, He is always Compassionate. The fact is that He Compassionate, All-Knowing and owns knowledge about the Unseen (ilm al-Ghayb). Thus, if He doesn’t grant that pleading servant (what he is asking for) then it is due to the fact that this person might become a worse person than what he already is; making him a dictator for instance after having attained power and money. This is why a person has to have qina’a (contentment) and be thankful for what he is and has at all time.

3. He will give only if we ask. 

What’s meant with this third category is that there are things that Allah only gives after a certain time. Attributes such as qina’a (contentment) and sabr (patience) are very important for the pleading person at all time. 

Contentment lead to the fact that people becomes contented with what they already possess in this life, concentrate on their aims in life and at the same time occasionally ask for things that are meant to be taken with to the next life, such as becoming a more spiritual person, finding and helping those who are truly poor, etc. 

To be patient is extremely important, since impatient and begging repeatedly for something might be given by Allah but later seen as a loss by the servant. A typical example, which is included in this category, can occur within the business field. For example, someone is looking for a house to buy but he ends up not being able to buy one because of many financial problems  hinder him from doing so. He prays to God that he’ll be able to buy this house but as long as such obstacles remain he won’t be able to buy it. After a couple of weeks, while the obstacles still remain, news reaches him that the prices of all the houses in that area have diminished thus now he can buy the house much cheaper. This typical example occurs in our society and is also the answer to the question (above) that was brought forth to me by the brother.  Hence, Allah knows best when is the best time for our supplications to be realized, since He and only He possesses ilm al-ghayb (science of the Unseen, including the future).    

This is emphasized in the Holy Quran: 

Fighting is enjoined on you, and it is an object of dislike to you; and it may be that you dislike a thing while it is good for you, and it may be that you love a thing while it is evil for you, and Allah knows, while you do not know.
(Surah Al-Baqarah (Chapter 2 – The Cow) verse 216)

As a conclusion it is worth mentioning that some people prefer not to ask God for anything simply because they feel that they are satisfied with their life. This is wrong! Everyone has to ask (Allah) for something. Allah has given us this right even though we are his servants. It doesn’t have to be something from this world. For example, one could ask Allah to be given a healthy life or to die old and painless. An important fact concerning dua is that every time one makes dua one actually gets rewarded for it and that good deed gets registered into one’s book of deeds (which will be opened on the Judgment Day). 

Thus, during every supplication, do not forget to praise and glorify Allah (SWT), send blessings to the last Prophet Mohammad (SAAS) and his holy Household (AS), confess your sins and show sincere grief over them. Besides that, before asking anything for oneself one should pray for others, such as one’s family members, neighbor, relatives, friends, etc. In such a manner one’s supplication often gets answered faster. 

God is closer to us than our jugular vein (50:16). He hears everything, sees everything and read off the brain’s and heart’s secrets. Not a single secret can be hidden from our Creator. Thinking about a certain thing is enough for Allah to become aware of it, yet He loves the servant that asks for His help by uttering himself to Him.
Hence, don’t forget the conditions that our beloved Imam Ali (AS) has given us to maximize the purification of our heart and soul and consequently make our supplications become realized by being kept guided in His Straight and True Path, inshaAllah.

The question regarding why hazardous games are forbidden (haram) or unrecommended(makrooh) can be answered from a philosophic and logic perspective as well as from a psychological and of this a medical one.  

Prefrontal corex or al-naseyah

As fun as it may be, hazardous games influence the human psyche and even the forelock, called al-naseyah (in Arabic) – named in the Holy Quran – or medically speaking, the prefrontal cortex (in Latin):  

In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most merciful.

Does he not know that Allah does see?
Nay, but if he cease not We will seize him by the forelock -
The lying, sinful forelock -
(The Holy Quran: Surah Al-Alaq (Kapitel 96 – The Clot) verse 14-16)  

A man’s forelock (or al-naseyah) is the center of planning, reasoning… and decision-making, such as to become angry and lie; which is medically proven and even taught in medical schools all around the world.
In other words, al-naseyah is the ‘government’ of our nervous system that gives order to our other body parts to carry out good deeds or to commit sins, such as by hitting someone or become angry.  

So far it is too early to get into the subject of hazardous games since the linkage between this topic and al-naseyah isn’t obvious yet; therefore, another scientific aspect is needed in order to enable understanding of the existing correlation.
One of many medical studies (such as Prefrontal Cortex Deactivation During Video Game Play, by the Japanese Dr.Goh Matsuda and Dr.Kazuo Hiraki, source) carried out, have shown that those playing video games and watch television a lot get a decrease in their forelock activity; which is one of the reasons why one cannot leave the TV to carry out more important things, such as doing homework or perform the prayers, after having watched TV long enough. On every such occasion we say to ourselves:”Ahh… I’ll get up a bit later.” This excuse is used most of the time and its true cause is that as soon as the activity in the forelock shrinks the whisperings of Satan will commence and distract the person in order to hinder him from thinking, planning, and therefore prioritize more important things in life. This is why youths tend to become more addicted to video games and TV; since their ability to think, plan and decide gets inactivated and as a result they “surrender” themselves to the TV’s entertaining role.    

Now is the time to start with the main topic, namely hazardous games.  

Let us take the example of card games, where luck decides most of the game’s outcome.  

Many medical studies, such as Why do we gamble and take needless risks?, by Professor Keith Kendrik, a British scientist (source), have shown that each time a person wins the forelock gets activated, whereas each time he loses the forelock gets inactivated. This indicates that each time a person loses he gets deeper and deeper into a downwards state that doesn’t lead to any reward for the brain’s hormonal activity but instead results in the inactivation of our thinking and decision ability.  

This is among the many reasons why a card game is taken seriously even though no money has been bet nor are any enemies playing along, other than friends.  

The diminishing activity in the forelock leads to the fact that one cannot think clearly and at the same time wants to get back the reward-sensation one used to get on every winning occasion. When an individual doesn’t get any reward he becomes desperate, becomes more and more jealous and as a result gets angry. It is at this specific time that Satan’s whispering takes such a full effect that the angry person would react verbally (by swearing for instance) or moreover, react physically and become violent. It is interesting to know that the central site of the human intellect is the naseyah. As soon as a person’s intellect isn’t controlled by one’s own ego (nafs) he gets exposed to risks to commit sins due to the fact that the negative feelings above dominate the brain’s activity.  

This is the reason why in desperate situations, the person often sells his clock, his furniture, his car and even his own child (which has been seen in extreme cases) after having lost more and more money and fallen into deep debts.  

Of course our topic isn’t about money here, but from the example given above, one finally understands why our 6^th Imam, Imam Sadiq(A.S.) said:
“One shall not take a ‘path’ that leads to commit sin(s)” [instead of simply saying that one shall not commit sin(s)].
Actions that lead a person to a ‘place’ or a ‘state’ – where sins are usually committed (in this case hazardous games) – should be avoided at all cost so that a series of following and growing sins aren’t carried out.  

But still, let us assume that a person still chooses to play card because he is certain that he can control his temper by avoiding becoming jealous and angry each time he loses. This leads us to the question:
“If he succeeds in not becoming angry what guarantees that the others around the table don’t fall into such negative feeling after each loss or stressful situation?”
To answer this question let’s compare this situation to one of Fatima al-Zahra’s (A.S.) sayings, the daughter of the Holy Prophet Mohammed(S.A.A.S.): that a female doesn’t wear libas al-taqwa (i.e. hijab) exclusively for Allah and herself; she wears it also so that other people wouldn’t see her and as a result fall into sins. Thus, by reasoning in such a logic manner, she even took into account the consequences that a lack of hijab could lead to in a society. The same principle goes for hazardous games; an individual might believe that he won’t fall into risks but should instead take into account the fact that his friends might become victims of such risks. This is how a true ‘responsible’ Muslim person acts.  

Finally, by taking into account the medical and psycho-neurological aspect of this topic (even by the help of the saying of Zahra(A.S.)), we should classify hazardous games at least as makrooh (unrecommended) or preferably as haram in order to avoid a series of sins that can occur to the friends playing around the table or even to ourselves.   

'Shangoul' and 'Mangoul', two Iranian transgenic kids with human factor IX in their blood.

Royan scientists have succeeded in producing two transgenic kids, paving the way for Iran to join countries with the technology to generate drugs from transgenic animals.

In January 2010 following the birth of ‘Shangoul’ and ‘Mangoul’, Iran became the first Middle Eastern country to produce transgenic goats with foreign proteins in their milk, which renders them valuable sources of human factor IX for treating individuals suffering from hemophilia B.

Royan’s public relations office announced that two transgenic kids were produced in the center in the past month. Laboratory tests have revealed high concentrations of tissue Plasminogen Activator (tPA) in their blood.

tPA is the best available medication effective in preventing and treating cardiac arrest and its complications through eliminating the culprit blood clots; however, it is not commonly used due to its high price. A large sum of money is also dedicated for importing small quantities of the drug.

Iranian scientists believe these kids would be capable of producing considerable amounts of tPA by the time they enter the lactation phase.

One of these kids died within seven days of birth due to gastrointestinal failures; the other kid, however, is reported to be in a good health status.

All kinds of Cheeses

 
As you might have noticed the only thing that was covered in the previous section was the tryptophan contained in cheese. Does this imply that cheese doesn’t have any other health benefit?
No, it is actually the opposite. It has been shown that cheese contains high concentrations of essential nutrition, mostly of high protein and calcium quality as well as other nutritions such as phosphor, vitamin A, zinc, riboflavin (vitamin B2) and vitamin B12.

The consumption of some cheeses, such as Cheddar, Swiss, Blue, Monterey Jack and some others, have shown to diminish the risk for carries. Even though these anticariogenic effects haven’t been fully understood there are many mechanisms that are inportant to take notice of. The consumption of cheese stimulates the secretion of saliva which has carries reducing properties where it, among others, increases buffering capacity and promotes food clearance. Milk proteins in cheese have been demonstrated to neutralize plaque acids through their buffering capacity. Cheese appears to prevent acid demineralization and enhance remineralization of tooth enamel. To help reduce tooth decay, health professionals recommend eating cheese immediately after meals, or as a between-meal snack.

Many cheeses, particularly aged cheeses such as Cheddar and Swiss, contain little or no lactose. For this reason, cheese is an important source of calcium and many other nutrients found in milk for lactose maldigesters or persons who have difficulty digesting lactose or milk’s sugar. It has been demonstrated that its calcium content can take part in diminisking the risks for osteoporosis.

Even though all the facts concerning cheese contribute to health factors in the human body it is necessary to mention an important precausious measure when it comes to the comsumption of cheese.  That shall be our next topic at 2.6.1.3. Cheese and walnuts.

The most remarkable thing about this topic is that the number 71% could already be found in the Holy book of the Muslims – the Holy Quran.

This information from the Quran was not discovered until very recently by an Egyptian named Dr. Tareq Al Suwaidan.

His technique was as follows:

-          To count the number of times the word sea appeared in the Holy Quran. The number turned out to be 32.

-          Then he counted the number of times the word land appeared in the Holy Book; this lead to the number 13. In other words, the earth is composed of land and sea (of water) of 13 respectively 32 “units”.

-          If we sum these two numbers we get 45 which correlates with the earth as a whole, i.e. the entire land and the seas.

-          Then he finally did the following to find the ration that the water (seas) have with respect to earth’s entire surface:

Water (sea) = 32/45*100% = 71.11111111% and
Land = 13/45*100% = 28.88888888% 

Sobhan Allah (May God be Praised!) Therefore while asking God to Guide us the straight way (the Holy Quran 1:6) one has to really start reading the Book of Allah that contains unlimited knowledge that can indeed be discovered and at the same time learn much more that can be used in a society to get reward for it such as ethical values, history, medicine, geology, astronomy, etc.

Hence, it is crucial to consider the following saying of Imam Ali (A):

Whenever a tradition of the Holy Prophet is related to you, scrutinize it, do not be satisfied with mere verbatim repetition of the same because there are many people who repeat the words containing knowledge but only few ponder over them and try to fully grasp the meaning they convey.
(Imam Ali (A) – Nahjul Balagha, saying #98)

This saying refers to the Holy Prophet Mohammed (SAAS), a human being, so imagine to what extent one has to scrutinize the verses of Allah the Creator of the whole universe in order to fully grasp the meaning His Words, which He puts in His own Words as follows:

And were every tree that is on earth (made into) pens and the sea (to supply it with ink), with seven more seas to increase it, the words of Allah would not come to an end; surely Allah is Mighty, Wise.
(The Holy Quran: Surah An-Nahl (Chapter 16 – The Bee) verse 65)

So for western scientists for not having read and accepted its Words are the main reason why the discovery on the exact percentage of water on earth was not discovered by them.

For this reason the technique Dr. Suwaidan used in order to discover this shows us that he, as a Muslim, believes that the Holy Quran must be read by scrutinizing the words.

The technique he used above is only one example, there are many other thing that can be discovered through the Holy Quran by “counting-technique” and even “word-position-technique” (shown later in the next chapter called the Miracles of Iron, which isn’t posted yet).

Welcome to this unique section where I’ll be covering the latest scientific work proving without a doubt the existence of a Higher Power, thus God – our Creator.

These experiments and studies, such as the God experiment, the near-death experience, the study of death and dying, after death communication, the afterlife experiments and the energy healing experiments, performed by American and western medical researchers will be covered.

With the knowledge obtained from the sections 2.3, 2.4 and chapter 3 one can remark without a single doubt that a Divine-Power must be governing the human body; that the biological system isn’t created by chance or without a purpose. The human body’s and soul’s puropse is to create a connection with its Creator that in turn results in much benefits. In other words, after having read these works one can notice that whether we consciousely like it or not meditation and tranquility is proven to serve the interest of our body, mind, heart and most importanly soul, whose scientific nature and understanding is absolutely unknown to us. 

This chapter will come in early june, God-Willing.

In this section we will be dealing with the amazing sayings of our sixth Imam, Imam Sadiq (Peace be upon him).

Imam Sadiq (AS) said:

 “The heart possesses two ears; the spirit of belief slowly invites him towards righteous deeds, while the Satan slowly invites him towards evil deeds. Therefore, whoever becomes victorious in this struggle takes over heart’s control.”
(Source: Bihar al-Anwar vol. 70, p.53)

Since this saying involves both a medical and especially spiritual aspect it would be wise enough to bring forth its medical one as a start. The information revealed to us is very specific since the word ‘ears’ are named. Anatomically (outside the frame of Islam or any other religion) it is known that the human heart has two ears, called in Latin auricular dexter (right ear) and auricular sinister (left ear). These are located in the upper right and left part of the heart. What this saying is telling us is that the cells(or its smallest entities within) in the ears are involved in performing righteous deeds. Medically speaking, there are left ‘and’ right auricles (referred to as atrial appendages) which are continuous with the left atrium and right atrium (the upper chambers of the heart) respectively. They are believed to be remnants of the left and right atrium of the developing heart when we were embryos.
In the medical course of Human Physiology on learns that the human heart works myogenic, meaning that the heart’s beating is not triggered by the brain (neurogenic), but rather by the heart itself. Moreover, the exact place where the impulse of the heart ‘is initiated’ is located in the atrial wall, as said by Imam Sadiq (AS) through the words “takes over the heart’s control”. The exact location that generates nerve impulse on the auricle is called the sinoatrial (SA) node. The SA node is also referred to as the pacemaker of the heart as it sets the rate of contraction for the heart. Beyond that it spontaneously contracts and generates nerve impulses that travel throughout the heart wall causing both atria to contract; Sobhan Allah! (God be Praised!)’, that is exactly what Imam al-Sadiq (AS) said. The reason why this is possible is because the node is a specialized type of tissue that acts like both muscle and nervous tissue. When nodal tissue contracts (like muscle tissue) it generates nerve impulses (like nervous tissue) that travel throughout the heart wall.

But how do impulses generated from the SA node travel through the heart?
These impulses reach the atrioventricular (AV) node, which is a section of nodal tissue that lies on the right side of the partition that divides the atria, near the bottom of the right atrium. The AV node delays cardiac impulses from the sinoatrial node to allow the atria to contract and empty their contents first to the lower chamber called ventricles (see the picture below). Then the AV node relays cardiac impulses to the atrioventricular (AV) bundle. The atrioventricular bundle is a bundle of fibers that are located within the septum (wall) of the heart. The AV bundle carries cardiac impulses down the septum to the ventricles via the Purkinje fibers. These fibers are fiber branches that extend from the AV bundle and relays cardiac impulses to the ventricular cells causing the ventricles to contract so that the blood can be sent to the cells of our body as well as to our lungs through our blood vessels.

From medicine to spirituality:

You may have noticed that in this section I’ve said that heart commands one’s action whereas in other sections I have said the brain does it. The matter of fact is that both are true. Those who have read the chapter human heart have learned that the heart’s Electromagnetic(EM)-radiation is much stronger than that of the brain and has therefore a much greater influence on the rest of the body compared to the brain. Beyond that many scientists have discovered that the heart and brain communicate with each other bilaterally (2-ways). We all know that it is our brain’s frontal cortex (prefrontal cortex for higher decision-making) that commands the performing of actions through our body and senses. However, since the EM-wave of the heart is much greater than that of the brain and the fact that the heart has an EQ-intelligence(not IQ) due to the existence of heart cells capable of memorizing information (just like brain cells) it confirms us what some specialist have told us regarding the decision-making. It is the brain(in normal cases) that takes decision however since the heart could play a greater role it can influece the brain’s decision-making(by sending information to it); and this is what the saying above is about. That the information sent from the heart could alter the decision that is about to be made by the brain. Here’s an example on two people, one named Ali and the other Zaker. Let’s say Zaker is a poor person who comes to a mosque and begs for help. The first person who sees him is Ali. Ali is very tired and is very busy in the mosque. When he sees that Zaker is approaching him for help he tries to avoid him, yet at that specific moment he hesitates to do so. Some kind of feeling comes in his heart (a feeling of mercy and care) that makes him more humble and as a result he doesn’t avoid him but instead he goes toward him and help him with what ever he needs. This is an example on how Ali, at first, got negative thoughts in his brain however what saved him from taking such an inhuman action is that his spirit of belief slowly invited him towards righteous deed. Therefore, in this case, it is the spirit of belief that became victorious in this struggle, which lead him to help the poor man.

Finally we can realize that Imam Sadiq(AS) is truly among the most pure people ever created after the Holy Prophets(peace be upon them all) both from his spirituality and moral as well as his scientific-mystical knowledge on heart is unique. The fact that medical scientists use the word ear and that its phsysiological role correlates with that which has been mentioned in Imam Sadiq’s(AS) hadith leaves no room for any doubt or any possible coincidence. Since we all know that there wasn’t any medical or technological devices at that time we have to accept the fact that such knowledge had to be derived from a divine source, thus from no other than Allah Allmighty. Hence try to use the knowledge that you have learned from this section on heart as well as the chapter on the human heart(and brain) to reach the exceptional goal that is the true gift of God on earth; this gift is Ahlulbayt (AS) – the Household of the Holy Prophet Mohammed(SAAS). Therefore, as an individual, open a space in your heart for the love of all the last Prophet Mohammed (SAAS) and especially the Ahlulbayt (AS)(his household) by applying their teachings with the intention that the cells(or the deepest entity) of your body (particularly your heart) experience the true blessing of it, as Dr. J. Andrew Armour proved its existence scientifically and Patrick Glynn medically, statistically and clinically.

Iranian researchers have produced the world’s first anti-cancer medication derived from herbs indigenous to the country.

Spinal-z is a methanolic mixture of dried powdered seeds, domestic to Iran, which are considered poisonous on their own. The combination of the herbs has shown promising results in treating stomach cancer.

Iran’s Deputy Health Minister, Hamidreza Rasekh, said that spinal-z, which has strong anti-carcinogen properties, has successfully finished the three phases of clinical studies and will be ready to enter the market soon.

“Spinal-z is not a miracle drug for cancer but it can be an effective means to control such malignancies,” Rasekh added.

Spinal-z is proven to be effective in treating stomach cancer; its effect on other types of cancer, however, requires further research.

As modern science is under progress at all time through scientific research and developments in technology we are likely to cover new sayings as soon as they get confirmed by facts rather than controversial theories.

But before jumping into his scientific sayings we need to clarify who this first Imam – Imam Ali (peace be upon him) – really was and what his status was near God, humanity and above all the Shia Muslims:

Introduction to the knowledge of Imam Ali (AS)

In other words, it explains that to get to the Prophet Mohammed’s (SAAS) knowledge (City of Knowledge) one has to go through its ‘Door’ or “Gate”, which means to apply the teachings of Imam ´Ali (AS / Peace be upon him)!
But the real question that should be asked is what kind of knowledge is it that was so unique especially at that time and even today that the Prophet Mohammed (SAAS) was referring to?
At that time there were neither scientific devices nor technology; in other words, there was almost no way for any human being to discover something scientific (such as in medicine) since it would require technology for it to be verified.

Therefore, as an example, it was impossible for anyone to claim that he has discovered that human beings have hemoglobin in the blood. However, if one would have discovered it at that time (1400 years ago) then it must have come from a holy script (such as the Holy Quran or the Christians’ and Jews’ Testaments). But what if that specific accurate scientific information is not mentioned in such Books… then where have these individuals, such as Prophets (AS) or the Imams (including Imam Ali (AS)), acquired these facts from?
The only source that remains is from God Himself through the Holy Angels.
In one of Imam Ali’s (AS) sermons the following is said:

“…He (the Prophet) informed me of all this and also about the death of every one who dies, the salvation of every one who is granted salvation, and the consequences of this matter (the caliphate). He left nothing (that could) pass into my head without putting it in my ear and telling me about it.”
(Source: Nahjul Balaghah sermon #174)

Imam Ali (AS) was so pure in spirit and straightforward in morality, according to the education he received from the Messenger of Allah, that many shadows of the hidden future were lighted before him. He said:

“…When the Holy Prophet (SAAS) received the first revelation, Satan lamented so loudly that I asked the Holy Prophet: Who is lamenting and why? He replied, ‘It is Satan who has given up hopes of acquiring complete sway over human minds. In his disappointment, he is lamenting over the chance lost. Verily ´Ali, you also hear whatever I hear, and you see whatever I see; only you are not a prophet. But you are my wazir (minister), successor and helper, and you will always hold the truth and justice.’”

In another source Imam Ali (AS) said the following:

“O People! Ask me before you lose me for this is the basket of knowledge, this is the breath of the Messenger of Allah (s.a.w.), and this is what the Messenger of Allah fed me. Therefore, ask me for I have the knowledge of the first ones and the last ones…”

O’ people! Ask me before you lose me, because certainly I am acquainted with the passages of the sky more than the passages of the earth, and before that mischief springs upon its feet which would trample even the nosestring and destroy the wits of the people.

These are some of many other reasons that including his spirituality and devotedness Imam Ali’s (AS) knowledge was as unique as the knowledge of the last Prophet Mohammed (SAAS).

Therefore the most important question that remains is what the first Imam knew that was so special for the people of his time, those of today as well as the people of the future?
We will insha’Allah (God Willing) be covered extensively some examples on medicine in order to show to readers just a glimpse of the exceptional knowledge that Imam Ali (AS) had got from Allah through the Holy Angels (AS) as well as from the Holy Prophet Mohammed (SAAS).
So far two examples will be given and analyzed depply from a scientific point of view to really grasp the worth of his scientific  sayings, given the fact that these sayings were recorded for over 1400 years ago.
The first example will be on the human ear followed by a sayings related to the cell memory theory (specifically the human flesh) that some world-leading scientists believe it to exist within all the cells of a human body. Right after the latter (in the same post) there will be a closure to the knowledge of Imam Ali (AS) and how to aim us toward his unique knowledge in order to become a successful servant of the Almighty Creator of mankind – Allah.

“Though the world’s attention has focused on Iran’s advancing nuclear program, Iranian scientists have moved to the forefront in embryonic stem cell research,” The Washington Times reported.

Stem cells are pluripotent cells capable of developing into any cell, tissue and organ in the human body. These cells are used to treat a variety of serious and debilitating diseases.

Many countries including the United States have placed a ban on stem cell research, saying that the destruction of an embryo, a potential human, for any reason even scientific research is prohibited.

The Iranian government however permitted such research in 2002 and paved the way for ‘ launching Iran to the scientific vanguard of the Muslim world’ as ‘scientific achievement is important to Iranian national pride’, The Washington Times said.

Ali Khadem-Hosseini, an Iranian immigrant to the US and one of the co-writers of the study conducted in Harvard University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, named Iran as one of the 10 top countries in producing, culturing and freezing human embryonic stem cells.

Khadem-Hosseini added that despite recent sanctions directed against the country, Iranian “research is improving”, saying that the future of the technology in Iran “definitely looks bright.”

Iran cloned Royana, the first cloned sheep in the Middle East, on Sept. 30, 2006, in the Iranian city of Isfahan.

Iranian scientists have crowned numerous other achievements in this field such as the isolation of human kidney stem cells and the differentiation of liver tissue in mice.

Man is a wonderful creature; he sees through the layers of fat [eyes], hears through bone [ears] and speaks through a lump of flesh [tongue].

In this saying one can deduce three different given medical facts. The one that we will be focusing on this time is the human ear.

The whole ear-anatomy: the outer-, middle- och inner-ear.

 

The thing that might be a bit odd is why Amir al-Mu’minin (Commander of the Faithful) Imam Ali (AS) did not say that we hear with our eardrum rather than bones.

In other words, let’s start from the following question:

Did our first Imam mistakenly use the term bone rather than eardrum in this saying?

Before we go into that let’s first describe these bones and their importance in our ear. Then we will return to this interesting matter.

 

The human ear is separated into three parts: the outer ear, middle ear and the inner ear. The region from the eardrum till the elliptical (oval) window is comprised in the middle ear. In this air-filled zone, the middle ear, there are three bones linked to one another. Starting from laterally toward inside these bones are called malleus, incus and stapes. These are the bones that Imam Ali (AS) was referring us to.    

The function of the middle ear is to increase the “sound pressure”, which is required to put the sluggish perilympha (a fluid), in the cochlea, into motion. It is the motion of this fluid that triggers the nerves, which in turn sends the information on what is being heard (by our ears) to our brain.

The three bones in the middle ear

The first relevant contribution to understanding the processes of sound transduction (sound transfer) was provided by Hermann von Helmholtz (1821-1894). He argued that the mechanical coupling provided by the middle ear optimizes the transfer of energy from the air that sets the eardrum into motion, to the fluid filling the cochlea.

Both the outer and middle ears are filled by air, but the inner ear is filled with fluid. When sounds are transmitted from air to this denser medium there is a decrease in pressure of approximately 30 decibels.

What each zone contains

To compensate for this pressure loss, the middle ear amplifies automatically sounds in two ways:

1. A factor 17 difference in area of eardrum and stapes footplate.
2. A factor 1.3 by a lever principle in the workings of the ossicles (three bones), especially by the long shape of the malleus.

As far as now we have learned that the three bones (ossicles) do amplify the vibrations created on the eardrum into fluid waves in liquid of the cochlea.
Hence, how exactly does the amplification of the sound occur?

Consider the following formula, from basics of course physics 101:

One should have noticed that the eardrum (0.5-1 cm2) is approximately 17 times greater in size than the oval window in which the footplate of the stapes (3.2 mm2) sits. This ratio provides approximately 20 decibels of amplification of sound. This difference in surface area coupled with lever action of the ossicles provides approximately 25 decibels of total sound amplification by the eardrum and ossicles. The amazing thing is that less than 1% of the sound that is to be transferred is reflected back (i.e. 99% of the sound is transferred).

But how does this work?

However there is still another amplifying factor of the transferred sound. In the figure above one can see that the stapedial footplate moves; it rotates while having its rotational center at its posterior edge. In other words, it is its anterior edge that results in a pressure on the perilympha that is located in the inner ear (after the oval window). Therefore, this result in a higher motion of perilympha (of the inner ear) which in turn can lead to a clearer perceived sound than if this rotational motion didn’t exist.

These are the main reasons why a sound amplification automatically occurs, thanks to the design of the three bones that Allah our Creator has made. As a reminder that is why we call God for al-Mosawir (the Designer) as one of the 99 Names of God.

So far we have proved medically that the middle ear does indeed both transfer the sounds heard and amplify them remarkably. Each time we used to use Q-tips for our ears our mother used to tell us to be careful not to damage our hearing. Hence, this leads us to the following important issue that is remained to be answered:
Without showing any signs of disrespect, did our first Imam mistakenly use the term bone rather than eardrum in this saying?

Remarkably the answer to this question is no. Instead, he was completely correct and meant what he meant by using the term bones.
Now how could that be?

Hopefully, there are some clinical experiments and observations done, taught by professors in any medical school that fully correlate with the saying of our dear Imam (AS).

This image shows a normal eardrum. Note that the eardrum is partially translucent and that some of the structures behind it (and therefore in the middle ear) can be seen. The straight white structure running at an angle from the center of the eardrum to the upper right is the malleus, the first of the three bones of the middle ear. The faint white structure just to the left of the malleus is the joint between the second and third bones of the middle ear, called the incus and the malleus.      

The perforation of an eardrum

The causes of perforated eardrum are usually from trauma or infection. Some examples of situations which can cause perforated ear drums are:

 

1. if the ear is struck directly with an open hand.

2. with a skull fracture.

3. after a sudden explosion.

4. if an object such as a bobby pin or Q-tip is pushed too far into the ear canal.

5. as a result of hot slag from welding or acid entering the ear canal.

 

Middle ear infections may cause pain, hearing loss and spontaneous rupture (tear) of the eardrum, resulting in a perforation. In this circumstance, there may be infected or bloody drainage from the ear. In medical terms, this is called otitis media with perforation.

On rare occasions a small hole may remain in the eardrum after a previously placed pressure equalization tube either falls out or is removed by the physician.

 

A perforated eardrum

This image shows a small perforation in the eardrum. The drum itself is bloody and less translucent than the normal case. There are no signs of infection, so this perforation most likely occurred due to trauma to the eardrum.

Considering the effects of hearing from perforated eardrums it is so that a small hole in the eardrum does not lead to a significant loss of hearing. However, that the larger the perforation is, the greater the loss of hearing (maximum of 30 dB). Moreover, the location of the hole (perforation) in the eardrum also affects the degree of hearing loss.

 

If severe trauma (e.g. skull fracture) disrupts the bones in the middle ear which transmit sound or causes injury to the inner ear structures, the hearing loss may be quite severe (around 60 dB); thus, much worse than the hearing lose resulted from the perforation of the eardrum.

What happens in such cases is that the middle ear’s reinforcement is entirely lost as well as the intact eardrum absorbs the greatest part of the sound energy of the sound waves that reach the eardrum. When these two observations add up to another they result in a strongly weakened sound wave that stretches behind the eardrum and reaches the oval window. Moreover, this sound wave reaches both the oval and the round window almost at the same time, resulting in the cancellation of the pressure waves of the sound in the fluid inside the cochlea. Hence, due to this cancellation almost no sound will be heard since in order for sound to be heard the motion of the fluid must occur and in turn trigger the nerves that send the information to our brain.  

If the perforated eardrum is due to a sudden traumatic or explosive event, the loss of hearing can be great and ringing in the ear (tinnitus) may be severe. In this case the hearing usually returns partially, and the ringing diminishes in a few days. Chronic infection as a result of the perforation can cause major hearing loss.

 

Sobhan Allah! (May God be praised!) Imam Ali (AS) was indeed right; that is just a glimpse of the knowledge on medical sciences he had at his time (i.e. 1400 years ago).

 

Some might argue that the bones could have been seen with the human eye (through an autopsy) and therefore would have been possible for Imam Ali (AS) to discover. But in reality, as you have seen it was impossible to discover all these observations (on the function of the bones rather than only the anatomy of the ears) without the use of sophisticated modern medical devices that we only have had during the past hundred years.

 

However notice that beyond those facts mentioned above new observations [to justify the Hadith #7 of Nahjul Balagha above] can occur in the future on the amazing roll that the middle ear’s bones play; Allah o Alem (only Allah Himself knows). That is why science is one of the most hidden and sophisticated branches of knowledge.

Does our flesh “understand”?

In Islam it is in our belief that everything that is in the seven heavens (including the Earth) is alive and worship their and our Lord, Allah:

The seven heavens extol (worship) His limitless glory, and the earth, and all that they contain; and there is not a single thing but extols His limitless glory and praise: but you [O men] fail to grasp the manner of their glorifying Him! Verily, He is forbearing, much-forgiving!
(Surah Al-Isra (Chapter 17 – The Journey by Night) verse 44)

Mankind has known for a long time that our brain cells have the capability to save information about our surrounding (through our senses). But today it has become a fact that all the cells that constitute out body play some kind of intelligent role by themselves since it is believed they all can save information.

This discovery was confirmed by Swedish medical researchers at the Karolinska Institute (newspaper Metro published on November 13, 2007, Swedish edition); where the theory on this was founded by American medical researchers, such as Dr. J Andrew Armour and Dr. Candace B. Pert (from the book Molecules of Emotion). The following has written by Dr. Pert in this book:

“Memories are stored not only in the brain, but in a psychosomatic network extending into the body… all the way out along pathways to internal organs and the very surface of our skin.”

The amazing thing about this and that proves this fact is that many of these cell types will say what they have to say clearly on the Day of Judgment.

As an example there is our skin that is described in the Holy Qur’an and that has been confirmed medically by Dr. Candace B. Pert:

Hence, [warn all men of] the Day when the enemies of God shall be gathered together before the fire, and then shall be driven onward,
till, when they come close to it, their hearing and their sight and their [very] skins will bear witness against them, speaking of what they were doing [on earth].
(Surah Fussilat (Chapter 41 – Explained in Detail) verses 19-20)

.

“Shall be driven onward” means to be formed into groups or ranks. The thing that one wonders is why our skin will witness against us; the answer to this is found in the following verse:

And they will ask their skins, “Why did you bear witness against us?” – [and] these will reply: “God, who gives speech to all things, has given speech to us [as well]: for He [it is who] has created you in the first instance – and unto Him you are [now] brought back.
(Surah Fussilat (Chapter 41 – Explained in Detail) verse 21)

As an example on memory saving in our cells we can take the muscle cells for instance. The first person who knew and had faith in this was the first Imam, Imam ‘Ali (AS), the cousin and son-in-law of the Prophet Muhammad (SAAS=Peace be upon him and his Household – i.e. the 12 Imams and the dotter of the Prophet, Fatima). In ‘Ali’s (AS) book, called Nahj-ul Balagha (The Peak of Eloquence), he gives the following directive (as one of the steps) so that a sinner could be forgiven by God for the sins committed earlier:

“…Fifth, to aim at the flesh grown as a result of unlawful earning, so that you may melt it by grief (of repentance) till the skin touches the bone and a new flesh grows between them.”

Here is the entire source from which the fifth step is taken from:

It is narrated by al Sayyid al Radi – may God be pleased with him – in the Nahj al balaghah that some said ‘Astaghfirullah (I seek God’s forgiveness) before Ali (AS). Ali said to him:

“Your mother may lose you! Do you know what istighfar (asking Allah’s forgiveness) is? Verily istighfar is a degree of the ‘illiyyun (i.e. is meant for people of a high position) and it is a word that stands on six supports.
First, to repent over the past;
Second, to make a firm determination never to revert to it;
Third, to return to the creatures their rights (usurped in the past) so that you meet God Almighty in such a state of purity that no one has a claim against you;
Fourth, to fulfil every obligation which you ignored (in the past) so that you may now do justice with it;
Fifth, to aim at the flesh grown as a result of unlawful earning, so that you may melt it by grief (of repentance) till the skin touches the bone and a new flesh grows between them;
Sixth, to make the body taste the pain of obedience as you (previously) made it taste the sweetness of disobedience.
When you have done all these six things then you may say Astaghfirullah!” 

This saying of Imam Ali (AS) has to do with reality, medically so do speak.
Many researchers confirm both this ethical and medical saying by stating out of medical reasons that our experiences in our daily can be saved into out muscle cells (as in our skin cells, as explained earlier). The source to this can be found in many medical websites including (click here) written by Bob G. Bodenhamer, D.Min. and L. Michael Hall, Ph.D.
Here is a part of written by them:

“In there, everything is so completely dynamic that they only way it can be sustained is through using the higher levels of mind (our meta-cognitions) to set up beliefs that keep on thinking the same thought so that it habituates and becomes muscle memory.  Of course, if we stop that process, then that memory will be changed, altered, or erased.  That’s why we are such good forgetters.  The things we program into our nervous system have to be constantly refreshed.  And, of course, all of this also identifies processes for intervention and transformation.”  

So that the fifth step can occur one must apply the first four steps.
In other words, the fifth step is a biomedical state that can occur only if the first four steps are fully fulfilled.

After have applied the two first steps one has reached such a state where one will no longer repeat the very same sin again; in other words, no more memory savings on that kind of sin will occur. When the two first steps are accomplished we have automatically fulfilled what we call for nahi anil monkar, meaning ‘forbidding evil’.

Then after have accomplished the next two steps (i.e. step 3 and 4) we will be performing good actions, including the so called wajibat. What happens in such cases is that good information is saved into our newly build muscle cells (among others) that replacing those muscle cells that contained information on our earlier performed sins. By fulfilling the third and fourth steps we are actually performing God’s command that is to ‘enjoy doing good’; in Arabic, called amr bil ma’roof.
The other thing that is extremely important to know is that God can forgive us for the sins related solely to ourselves but God will not forgive us for the sins committed on other people. To solve the problem of such sins one has to apply the third step (after have fulfilled the first two ones) by asking those people for forgiveness so that no one could have any claim against you on the Day of Judgment. If this task ignored a harmed person could receive his rights from Allah.
How could this person get his right from the harmer?
If we suppose that the weight of the sin committed on a woman is 10 units and that this harmed woman will ask God for her taken right then by the permission of Allah she will receive 10 units from your book of Deeds to her book of Deeds.
This implies that if the third step isn’t accomplished then it is as if we are erasing our good deeds; the precise opposite of amr bil ma’roof. 

The thing that one has to know is that the number of muscle cells being built is the same as those being destroyed.
Hence, in whole (after have performed the first four steps) there will no longer be any information saving on the specific sin (asked forgiveness for) into our muscle cells; instead information on good deeds is saved into the newly build muscle cells.
The thing that one has to notice is that with the time passing the specific sins that one has committed before and that haven’t been repeated will be erased from the muscle cells, especially where these are destroyed and replaced with new muscle cells containing good deeds and thoughts.

In other words, in order for us to be forgiven by our Lord we must train ourselves to perform morally good actions (amr bil ma’roof) and especially at the same time, or primarily, accustom us to avoid sins (e.g. starting by the most repeated one) – nahi anil monkar – so that the newly created muscle cells could remember about these good and newly saved information.  

This idea of cells that ‘remember’ is in Islam but that is used now as a strong theory by many researchers around the world in the same manner (read the medical quote in the previous page). So many of the sayings from fiq (Islamic jurisprudence), falsafa (Islamic philosophy) or tasawof (sufism) can be proved to be correct by analyzing the medical results obtained through experimental work and link these to those old Islamic sayings. 

So the aim of seeking forgiveness results automatically to struggle against our ego (nafs) that incites us towards bad deeds and thoughts. Therefore if one wants to seek for forgiveness then he could control this ego in order to both enjoy good and forbidding evil deeds and thoughts. Hence, by struggling against our ego and fulfilling the six steps we will succeed making our soul become cleaner and keep it that way. In our eyes and ears to keep our soul clean sounds like philosophy, since we haven’t really scientifically found our soul yet, but it shouldn’t any longer. The idea from these medical results proving that cells do in fact save information and later make use of them through muscle-nerve pathway to our brain and heart can in turn be used to both avoid sins and accomplish good deeds easier than before. This idea is not only applied to our muscle cells since what Allah says is the following:

He knows all that is in the heavens and on earth; and He knows all that you keep secret as well as all that you bring into the open: for God has full knowledge of what is in the hearts [of men].
(Surah at-Taghabun (Chapter 64 – Loss and Gain) verse 4)

The cells of the heart and the muscle cells are not the only places where information is saved where they later witness on the Day of Judgment:

And follow not that of which you have not the knowledge; surely the hearing and the sight and the heart, all of these, shall be questioned about that [on Judgment Day].
(Surah al-Isra (Chapter 17 – The Journey by Night) verse 36)

 On the day when their tongues and their hands and their feet shall bear witness against them as to what they did.
(Surah al-Nour (Chapter 24 – The Light) verse 24)

Hence, we should not be shocked that all the cells of our body will witness against us on the Day of Judgment; or else, there wouldn’t be any justice from God! What do you think?
What will happen to Hitler, for instance, who wasn’t put on trial for his crimes against humanity?
On the Day of Judgment, God will make Hitler pay compensation to all the innocent victims; that’s just a glimpse of Allah’s Greatness and His Justice as said on and on by God!
So whenever you hear God being the Greatest and the Most Just be aware of it at all times so that it would strengthen your inner faith as to become His true servant and a seeker of absolute justice for everyone and everything that reaches you on Earth!

Conclusion to the Knowledge of Imam Ali (AS):

So far we have proved for readers that the science of Imam ‘Ali (AS) is so unique that no one can even get close to it. But his knowledge is not only limited to his time:
Imam Ali (AS) said, “Ask me (anything) about the Book of Allah (Holy Quran). By Allah! There is not a single verse which was revealed during night or day, during travel or at home, but the Holy Prophet Muhammad (SAAS) read it to me and taught me its meanings…”

Ali (AS) also said, “If authority is given to me and I have to act as a judge, I will judge the followers of Tawrat (Torah) from Tawrat, the followers of Injeel (New Testament) from Injeel, the followers of Zaboor (Psalms) from Zaboor and followers of Furqan (Qur an) from Furqan. By Allah! There is not a single verse which has been revealed during night or day, in the field or in the mountains but that, I possess its knowledge as to where it was revealed and for whom it was revealed”.

But how can we aim us towards his science and knowledge?
We call all the prophets, the Household (Ahlulbayt) of the last Prophet (i.e. the daughter of the last Prophet Fatima (AS) and the 12 Imams) for ma’soomin (i.e. never committed any sins).
The important thing to understand is that he was the first Imam; 11 more Imams with the same status and Knowledge came after him.
The highest status that an ordinary person can reach is that of a true believer, but still never that of the prophets or the Household.
There is a famous term that we in Islam use to describe the status of believers and especially that of the ma’soomin.
These worshippers (believers) becomes so pure and attains such a high degree of proximity to His Creator that he begins to see with Allah’s Eyes, speak with Allah’s Tongue and hear with Allah’s Ears. In other words, the worshipper witnesses only what Allah wishes Him to witness. He speaks only what is in conformity with Allah’s satisfaction and He only lends his ears to talks that have divine approval. Please note that the words eye, tongue and ear should not be misinterpreted by concluding that God has eyes, tongue and ear; no, since Allah has already and clearly stated in the Holy Quran what he is:

God is the Light of the heavens and the earth. The parable of His light is, as it were, that of a niche containing a lamp; the lamp is [enclosed] in glass, the glass [shining] like a radiant star: [a lamp] lit from a blessed tree – an olive-tree that is neither of the east nor of the west the oil whereof [is so bright that it] would well-nigh give light [of itself] even though fire had not touched it: light upon light! God guides unto His light him that wills [to be guided]; and [to this end] God propounds parables unto men, since God [alone] has full knowledge of all things.
(Surah al-Nour (Chapter 24 – The Light) verse 35)

Allah has created man for worship. He has made His worship and servitude as a means of progress and perfection for man. Man must rise above material perfections and accomplishments and endeavor to attain true perfection, – which is nothing but proximity with the Creator. Traditions reveal that the recommended prayers (nawaafil) are one important medium to achieve divine proximity. But before performing these prayers one has to accomplish the compulsory prayers. Along with all this one has to know himself, be sincere to himself and do every good deed with good intention solely for himself and Allah and not make a show out of it.

The words of the sixth Imam, Imam Sadiq (AS), are the tongue of Allah. The Straight Path that the Qur’an has reached us – the Qur’an has came out from the great Prophet’s lips and has reached us – so the lips of the great Prophet and Imam Sadiq (AS) are the lips of Allah. The statement we received is just the same as we received the revelation.
Therefore here is another scientific saying from Imam Sadiq (AS), the tongue of Allah:

“One who recites the Qur’an and is a believing youth, the Qur’an becomes mixed with his flesh and blood, and Allah – The Noble and Great – will place him with the noble, devoted Angels.  In addition, the Qur’an will act as a barrier (between him and the Hell Fire) on the Day of Judgement.”
(Thawabul A’mal, Page 226, hadith 38)

Again, we can see here that the information contained in the Quran (after being read) is saved into our muscle and even blood; so that we could make use of it (the kind of sins to be avoided from various anecdotes) positively in all situations to become the most successful servants of God on Earth.
One interesting thing from the quote above is that the words “…still young…” are used. What we know from medical sciences is that at this period of time the human body is being both mentally and physically developed in a very fast rate. The increase in the physical appearance can be seen where the muscles and bones become stronger and larger in size. Beyond that the human skin expands and becomes thicker in almost all the regions of the body (internet-source based on a research done by researchers in dermatology from the Department of Dermatology, University of Modena and Reggio Emilia, Italy from year 2000 (click here).
Besides physically, the young grows mentally; that is to say his brain is being developed both in size and function (i.e. intellectually). More precisely it is the youth’s forelock that is becoming more functional and greater in size. So the question that is raised is the following:

What’s so special with the forelock and what does it have to do with all this?
Let’s see what God, our Creator, has revealed to us on this:

No! If he does not stop, We will take him by the naseyah (i.e. forelock or front of the head),
a lying, sinful naseyah!
(Surah al-Alaq (Chapter 96 – The Clot) verses 15-16)

These verses imply specifically that it is our forelock (in medical language of Latin: prefrontal cortex) in our brain that commands to our tongue to lie (or the opposite, to tell the truth) as well as to other body parts to commit sins (or the opposite, avoid committing sins). These two verses are covered extensively in another chapter – the Human Brain.
While analyzing these two types of sins (lying and sinning) one notices that western researchers have learned that it these two kinds of actions are committed by the use of our forelock; therefore, as for now here are some of the sources, related to medical discoveries:

Hence, what the quote above is implying is the information from the Holy Quran, read by the young regularly until adulthood and with the time being saved into those three kind of human cells, can be used by our forelock to carry out good deeds and avoid committing sins; as to become a true servant of God on Earth!

Sobhan Allah (May God be Praised!) to have created this unique Household (Fatima (AS) and the 12 Imams) with their unique Knowledge! Surely, the Family of the Holy prophet Muhammad (SAAS) was extraordinary by all means!

Finally, May Allah grant all those who truly carry out good deeds and avoid committing bad actions by the use of the Knowledge of this Household as to faithfully follow their Straight Path until their own passing.

EAT, then, of that over which God’s name has been pronounced, if you truly believe in His messages.
(Surah Al-An’am (Chapter 6 – The Cattle) verse 118)

Therefore it is clearly stated that one can only eat meat on which God’s name has been pronounced at during the slaughtering (and facing towards the Kabah (in Mecca) – the House of God built by the Prophet Ibrahim (AS)). Some might conclude that the meat can therefore be any meat, but that’s not the case; there are meats and other things that are haram and are stated in the following Quranic verse:

FORBIDDEN to you is carrion, and blood, and the flesh of swine, and that over which any name other than God’s has been invoked, and the animal that has been strangled, or beaten to death, or killed by a fall, or gored to death, or savaged by a beast of prey, save that which you [yourselves] may have slaughtered while it was still alive; and [forbidden to you is] all that has been slaughtered on idolatrous altars. And [you are forbidden] to seek to learn through divination what the future may hold in store for you: this is sinful conduct. Today, those who, are bent on denying the truth have lost all hope of [your ever forsaking] your religion: do not, then, hold them in awe, but stand in awe of Me! Today have I perfected your religious law for you, and have bestowed upon you the full measure of My blessings, and willed that self-surrender unto Me shall be your religion. As for him, however, who is driven [to what is forbidden] by dire necessity and not by an inclination to sinning -behold, God is much-forgiving, a dispenser of grace.

As you can see carrion, blood and the flesh of swine are haram.

So far we have explained what haram and halal means but we haven’t really explained why a haram meat is forbidden to eat, or in other words what is it that makes a meat halal, since Muslims believe that meat being haram is unhealthy for mankind. This will be the main discussion that will follow. Hence the question of halal and haram meat is not only a question of religious act (pronuncing God’s name towards the Ka’bah), beyond that, scientific reasons do lie behind the truth of why we should eat halal meat and what halal is meant accordning to science.

The Islamic practice of slaughtering animals by means of a sharp cut to the front of the neck has frequently come under attack by some animal rights activists as being a form of animal cruelty, the claim being that it is a painful inhumane method of killing animals. In the West, it is required by law to stun the animals with a shot to the head (one of few methods used) before the slaughter, supposedly to leave the animal unconscious and to prevent it from reviving before it is killed so as not to slow down the movement of the processing line. It is also used to prevent the animal from feeling pain before it dies.

German Research Studies Pain

It therefore may come as a surprise to those who have made such acclimations to learn of the results of a study carried out by Professor Wilhelm Schulze and his colleague Dr. Hazim at the School of Veterinary Medicine, Hannover University in Germany. The study: ‘Attempts to Objectify Pain and Consciousness in Conventional (captive bolt pistol stunning) and Ritual (“halal”, i.e. with knife). Methods of Slaughtering Sheep and Calves’ concludes that Islamic slaughtering is the most humane method of slaughter and that captive bolt stunning, practiced in the West, causes severe pain to the animal.

In the study, several electrodes were surgically implanted at various points of the skull of all animals, touching the surface of the brain. The animals were allowed to recover for several weeks. Some animals were then slaughtered by making a fast, deep cut with a sharp knife on the neck cutting the jugular veins and the carotid arteries as well as the trachea and oesophagus (Islamic method).

Other animals were stunned using a Captive Bolt Pistol (CBP). During the experiment, an electroencephalograph (EEG) and an electrocardiogram (ECG) recorded the condition of the brain and the heart of all animals during the course of slaughter and stunning.

The results were as follows:

I – Islamic Method

1. The first three seconds from the time of Islamic slaughter as recorded on the EEG did not show any change from the graph before slaughter, thus indicating that the animal did not feel any pain during or immediately after the cut.
2. For the following 3 seconds, the EEG recorded a condition of deep sleep – unconsciousness. This is due to the large quantity of blood gushing out from the body.
3. After the above-mentioned 6 seconds, the EEG recorded zero level, showing no feeling of pain at all.
4. As the brain message (EEG) dropped to zero level, the heart was still pounding and the body shaking vigorously (a reflex action of the spinal cord) driving a maximum amount of blood from the body thus resulting in hygienic meat for the consumer.

II – Western method by C.B.P. Stunning

1. The animals were apparently unconscious soon after stunning.
2. EEG showed severe pain immediately after stunning.
3. The hearts of animals stunned by C.B.P. stopped beating earlier as compared to those of the animals slaughtered according to the Islamic method resulting in the retention of more blood in the meat. This in turn is unhygienic for the consumer.

Western-Style Slaughtering and Mad Cow’s Disease:

Not only is this method of stunning animals before the slaughter severely painful as shown by the previous experiment, but there is also a rising concern that this method may be a factor in the spread of mad cow’s disease from cattle to humans as it was discovered in recent research carried out at Texas A&M University and by Canada’s Food Inspection Agency, that a method called pneumatic stunning (which is the firing of a metal bolt into the cow’s brain followed by a pulverizing burst of 150 pounds of air pressure) delivered a force so explosive that it scattered brain tissue throughout the animal. This news is disturbing since the brain tissue and spinal cord are the most infectious parts of an animal with mad cow disease, which causes fatal Swiss cheese like holes in the brain of the infected animal. It is more disturbing to find out that around 30 to 40 percent of American cattle are stunned by pneumatic guns.

Islamic Regulations for the Slaughter:

As one can see from the previous studies, Islamic slaughtering of animals is a blessing to both the animal and to humans alike. In order for the slaughtering to be lawful, several measures must be taken by the one performing the deed. This is to ensure the highest benefit to both the animal and the consumer.
In this regard, the Prophet Mohammed (peace be upon him & his Household) said:

“God calls for mercy in everything, so be merciful when you kill and when you slaughter: sharpen your blade to relieve its pain”.

The object used to slaughter the animal should be sharp and used swiftly (quickly). The quick cutting of vessels of the neck disconnects the flow of blood to the nerves in the brain responsible for pain. Thus the animal does not feel pain. The movements and withering that happen to the animal after the cut is made are not due to pain, but due to the contraction and relaxation of the muscles deficient in blood. The prophet (SAAS) also taught Muslims neither to sharpen the blade of the knife in front of the animal nor to slaughter an animal in front of others of its own kind. Therefore, the use of anesthetics would have no effect at all since it has been proven that the Islamic way of slaughtering, unlike the western, does not lead to any pain for cattles.

The cut of the throat should involve the windpipe (trachea), gullet (oesophagus), and the two jugular veins without cutting the spinal cord. This method results in the rapid gush of blood draining most of it from the animal’s body.
If the spinal cord is cut, the nerve fibers to the heart might be damaged leading to cardiac arrest thus resulting in arrest of blood in the blood vessels. The blood must be drained completely before the head is removed. This purifies the meat by removing most of the blood that acts as a medium for microorganisms; meat also remains fresh longer as compared to other methods of slaughtering.

The reason why pain isn’t felt is not yet known, as far as I know. But if we were to use the experimental facts on the Islamic method then we could drag a theory or rather a strong one.
Fist of all, we know as a fact that the veins and arteries in the throat must be cut. When this is done no blood (oxygen, nutrition among others) will reach the brain cells. Hence no pain can be perceived by these cells.

Why does the heart beat longer with the Islamic way of slaughtering than the western?
As a remark, if we were to talk about humans instead of cattles then the fact concering our biological system could explain the cardiac arrest occurring in cattles. Therefore allow me to name a few facts that certainly are related to one another:

- The heart beat is always selfinitiated by itself without the help of the brain.

- However the heart’s rhythm and strength is controlled by nerves called the sympathetic (stimulating) and the parasympathetic (inhibitory) nervous systems where each one of these are active. Both of these nervous system (together belonging to the autonomic nervous system class) stretch from the spinal cord and the brain stem to the heart among others sites. In medical human anatomy courses one learns that the nerves from T1 to T5 of the spinal cord reach to the heart. Therefore, if lesions would occur above the level T1 and below T5 of the spinal cord the brain would no longer be able to control the rhythm and strength of the heart beats though the sympathetic nerves whereas the parasympathetic nerves could still be working (source).

Therefore the following fact are important to take into account along with their understanding:

- The lesions above T1 can be compared to western method of cutting cattles’ throat. In such cases the heart cannot be stimulated to beat stronger and faster by the sympathetic nervous system to increase the blood circulation so that blood would leave the body though the cut blood vessels of the throat. This is one of the reasons why more blood stays and makes the meat haram.
- Besides this it has been experimentally observed that cattles’ heart rhythm before and 30 seconds after being stunned are the same (source). This leads us to the understanding that the use of anesthetics, or not, gives no effect on the cattle’s heart rhythm.
- In the report from the last given source the following is said: “When the heart was stopped as part of the stunning procedure, blood collected was only 46% of that recorded from lambs stunned in the traditional manner“. This implies that stunning leads to the fact the less blood leaves the body.
- Once the stunning occurs the respiration of the cattle ceases (source). The reason for this is that the stunning results in the inactivation of the brain’s respiratory control centers.

The interesting thing about the following one of the reports (source) is the following that they concluded:
“It is clear that delayed bleeding after stunning will increase somewhat the amount of blood retained by the carcass and some additional blood is retained if the heart has stopped beating when the animals are bled….
However, this latter point is not as clear from our data as it is from data of Kirton et al. (1981), where a stunning method that stops the heart immediately was studied….
However, the stunning method described by Kirton et al. (1981), in which the heart was stopped, increased blood retained in the carcass and reduced carcass blood splash.“

As you can see, the sum of all these facts, based on experiments, do tell us that the western method of stunning and later the decapitating of the cattle has many negative effects concerning the retention of blood (or the much less blood loss) compared to the traditional Islamic method of use.

Therefore accusations of animal cruelty should very correctly be focused on those who do not use the Islamic way of slaughtering but prefer to use those methods which cause pain and suffering to the animal and could also very well cause harm to those consuming the meat.

As can be seen above, the Islamic method of slaughtering ensures the least amount of pain is felt by the animal at the same time rendering the meat safe to eat. The swift cutting of vessels of the neck disconnects the flow of blood to the nerves in the brain responsible for pain, and thus the animal does not feel pain. The movements and withering that happen to the animal after the cut is made are not due to pain, but due to the contraction and relaxation of the muscles deficient in blood. This movement is also essential in forcing the maximum amount of blood from the body, which is extremely important in order to purify the meat, as remaining blood acts as a medium for microorganisms, in addition to meat remaining fresher for a longer period of time. Also crucial to this factor is the severance of the trachea, esophagus, and the jugular veins in conjunction with the carotid arteries, which cause a rapid gush of blood to flow from the system. Severance of the spinal cord, however, may lead to cardiac arrest, causing the stagnation of blood in the blood vessels due to the damage of nerve fibers leading to the heart.

Other Slaughtering Methods used:

There is way more to this. More slaughtering methods that are used on several animals will be briefly described.

1- Mechanical Methods:

• Captive Bolt Pistol (CBP): This stunning method is widely used for all farmed animals and rabbits. Gun powder (cartridge), compressed air and spring under tension drive bolts through the skull of animals. This type of stunning is widely used for all farmed animals. It is called ‘captive’ since the bolt is shot out of the barrel but remains attached to the pistol.
• Concussion stunning. A mechanically operated instrument delivers a blow to the brain and concusses the brain. Used for cattle, sheep, calves, rabbits.
• Free bullets. Used for animals difficult to handle such as wild pigs, bison, deer, horses or in emergencies.
After stunning animals may be pithed, involving inserting a rod into the cavity made by the bolt to destroy the lower portion of the brain and the upper spinal cord. In all these methods, unconsciousness is caused either by penetration of the skull which causes brain damage or by causing a concussive blow to the brain without penetration. After stunning the animal undergoes sticking which cuts off the blood supply to the brain. After animals are stunned and stuck, they are bled, and it is the bleeding that causes death. The industry requires that the heart should remain beating as long as possible after sticking to ensure that as much blood as possible is removed from the flesh and blood vessels.

2- Electric stunning:

• Head-Only Stunning: Cattle, sheep, goats and ostriches are all stunned using this method. The technique involves the application of a pair of electric tongs on either side of the animal’s head. An electric current is then passed through the brain and this supposedly leads to the temporary loss of consciousness.

• Cardiac arrest stunning: Used for cattle, sheep, pigs, rabbits and goats. An electric current is either sent through the head and body at the same time to span the brain and heart or is sent though the head first and then across the chest or through the head and body at the same time.

• Water Bath Stunning: This is a widely used method of stunning for chickens, turkeys, geese and ducks. In this method, birds are shackled upside-down on a moving conveyor belt that takes them to the electric water bath. The birds’ heads are to supposedly be immersed in this water causing their electrocution. In recent years, the strength of the electric current has been raised to ensure the death of the birds by cardiac arrest.

In my opinion this method is among the worse because it is known scientifically that the blood becomes dry during the electrical shock these cattles are subjected to.
Beyond the retension of blood an article shows that the stress-related hormones cortisol and arenalin are produced and found in the blood during the inhuman electric shock the cattle is experiencing. So the real question that remains is what kind of negative effects the consumption of such meat containing such stress-hormones have on our health. Are we really safe eating electrocuted chicken? If so then think again!

3- Gassing:
Birds may be stunned using CO2 and Argon gas while they remain in their crates (cages). Pigs are also gassed using CO2.

4- Sticking:
In this method a knife is stuck into the animal’s throat or neck causing brain death from the rapid loss of blood supply to the brain.

Does the Animal Feel Pain in These Methods?

Studies have shown that stunning the animal with the mentioned techniques put the animal through unnecessary pain. Concerning CBP, the study at the German University showed the following result for stunned animals:
1. The animals were apparently unconscious soon after stunning.
2. EEG showed severe pain immediately after stunning (due to the stunning).
3. The hearts of the animal stunned by CBP stopped beating earlier as compared to those of the animals slaughtered according to the Halal method resulting in the retention of more blood in the meat. This in turn is unhygienic for the consumer.
* Although the animals were rendered unconscious, they felt severe pain from the stunning, a factor not present in the Islamic manner.

In order to be effective, CBP stunning must be performed by highly trained personnel, and specific cartridge strengths must be used. If this is not the case, or if the pistol is not positioned correctly, the animal will have to endure the pain of being shot incorrectly, and then will have to face the pain of being shot again, or the claimed pain (although not true) of being knifed while conscious. If the animal were to have been slaughtered without CBP, there would have been none or minimal pain felt by the animal. In a 1996 report, the Scientific Committee of the European Commission said that, “In 5 to 10% of cattle, captive bolt stunning is not applied correctly,” which according to VIVA (Vegetarian International Voice for Animals), translates to 230,000 cattle in the UK alone. FAWC (Farm Animal Welfare association) reported, “In the course of our slaughterhouse visits, we have frequently examined carcass heads to check the site of bolt penetration. In our view, there were far too many cases where penetration had not been at or near the recommended position and also evidence of a considerable number of double shots (i.e. indicating that the first shot had missed its proper target).”
The same may be said for electric head-only stunning. The Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (RSPCA) says “There is increasing scientific evidence that some animals that are stunned electrically using tongs regain consciousness before they die from loss of blood.” The reasons behind this are either an inefficient electric current being passed through the animals’ brain during stunning or the animals begin to regain consciousness if the time interval between stunning and sticking exceeds a period of 20 seconds.
VIVA explains this saying that the stun caused by the electric head-only technique lasts between 20 and 40 seconds whereas the interval between stunning and knifing is as high as 70 seconds for sheep. This means that there are around 5 million sheep that regain consciousness after being electrically stunned before they die of blood loss.
Research done at Bristol University has also shown that after an electric stun, sheep may not be able to feel pain; they do, however, experience periods of full awareness. Furthermore, there is no evidence that the loss of consciousness is immediate, and some people, like neurophysiologist Dr. Harold Hilman, believe that stunning is extremely painful, pointing out that the electrocution of prisoners is used as a torture method in some countries. The animals cannot express this pain by crying out or by moving since the massive electric current paralyzes them.
Inadequate stunning also occurs in water bath stunning, especially with ducks and geese, as they tend to raise their heads when entering the water bath and their heads are therefore not fully immersed in the water. Another problem with this method is that, although the aim of this method is to induce cardiac arrest, “many birds are improperly stunned and recover consciousness before slaughter,” according to the RSPCA. This is also the case for sticking, as animals may regain consciousness prior to death.
The pain felt by any living being through suffocation, as in the case of gassing, is clear to any person and need not be detailed.
What can be observed is that although these methods are supposedly meant to reduce pain, the result is that the animal actually undergoes more pain, both from the initial stunning and from the following actions if stunning is performed inadequately. Again, causing unnecessary pain to animals is prohibited in Islam.

Health:

Removal of Blood:

It is clear that the removal of the maximum amount of blood before death of the animal is crucial to the purity of the meat. In the various methods of stunning, animals may undergo cardiac arrest after stunning, either unintentionally, such as electric head-only stunning, or intentionally, such as electric water bath stunning, in which enough electricity is used to ensure cardiac arrest of poultry. From the results of the experiment of the German University was that the hearts of animals stunned by CBP stopped beating earlier as compared to those of the animals slaughtered according to the Islamic method resulting in the retention of more blood in the meat. Stunning also causes ‘salt and pepper’ hemorrhage where the small blood vessels rapture, and blood leaks into the meat tissue. All these techniques cause the blood to remain in the vessels, encouraging the spawning of microorganisms.

Contamination of Meat
There is a rising concern that stunning may be a factor in the spread of mad cow’s disease from cattle to humans, as it was discovered in recent research carried out at Texas A&M University and by Canada’s Food Inspection Agency, that a method called pneumatic stunning (which is the firing of a metal bolt into the cow’s brain followed by a pulverizing burst of 150 pounds of air pressure) delivered a force so explosive that it scattered brain tissue throughout the animal. This news is disturbing since the brain tissue and spinal cord are the most infectious parts of an animal with mad cow disease, which causes fatal Swiss cheese like holes in the brain of the infected animal. It is more disturbing to find out that around 30 to 40 percent of American cattle are stunned by pneumatic guns.
It was found by an experiment conducted by Gregory and Whittington in 1992 and published in Research in Veterinary Science under the title of Inhalation of Water During Electrical Stunning in Chickens that “chickens can and do inhale water during electric stunning in a water bath. No remedy for this is available at the moment.” It was also noticed that birds may defecate while being stunned and so live birds may inhale water fouled by feces at stunning, thus making their meat unhygienic as the fluids may leak out of the lungs and cause contamination.

Fear of Death

In many of these stunning techniques, animals die before they are slaughtered, either unintentionally, such as CBP and electric head-only stunning, or intentionally, such as gassing. This, according to Islam, renders the meat inedible and prohibited (i.e. “Haram” (bad), the opposite of “halal”(good)), as it enters the category of carrion meat.

Conclusion

The legislations of the religion come from a Divine source, the Creator of all that exist, One Whose knowledge of His creation is infinite. This fact necessitates that all things mandated by God in the religion are done so from this Divine Knowledge, and therefore must be ultimate in all ways. Analyzing the legislations mandated and recommended in the religion of Islam will definitely come to show that indeed they are the best and most suitable to any given circumstance, and that they have a common denominator, the maximization of benefits and reduction of harm. As some people classify the Islamic method of slaughter to be cruelly to animals, the reality shows facts quite the opposite. Accusations of animal cruelty should very rightly be focused on those who do not use the Islamic way of slaughtering, but prefer to use those methods which cause pain and agony to the animal and could also very well cause harm to those consuming the meat.

This man is uttering the Islamic creed (Shahaadah in Arabic) thus declaring that he is becoming a Muslim. This occurred during the Eighth Saudi Medical Conference (3 November 1983 ???) which was convened in Riyadh. He is Professor Tejatat Tejasen, Chairman of the Department of Anatomy at Chiang Mai University in Thailand. He was previously the Dean of the Faculty of Medicine at the same university.

Professor Tejasen was presented with some Quranic verses and Prophetic ”Ahadith” (traditions) which dealt with his specialization in the field of anatomy. He commented that they also had in their Buddhist books very accurate descriptions of embryonic developmental stages. He was told that they were very anxious and interested to see those descriptions and learn about these books. A year later, Professor Tejasen came to King Abdul Aziz University as an outside examiner. When reminded of the statement he made one year before, but he apologized and said that he in fact had made that statement without ascertaining the matter. However, when he checked the Buddhist books he found that they contained nothing of relevance to the subject.

Upon this, he was presented with a lecture written by Professor Keith Moore about the compatibility of modern embryology with what is contained in the Quran and the ”Ahadith” and when Professor Tejasen was asked if he knew of Professor Keith Moore. He replied that he knew him of course, adding that Professor Moore was one of the most world-renowned scientists in that field.

When Professor Tejasen studied this article he also was greatly astonished. He was asked several questions in his field of specialization. One of the questions pertained to modern discoveries in dermatology about the sensory characteristics of the skin. Dr. Tejasen responded: “Yes if the burn is deep.”

It was stated to Dr. Tejasen: You will be interested to know that in this book, the Holy Book – the Quran, there was a reference 1500 years ago which pertains to the moment of punishment of the unbelievers by the fire of Hell and it states that when their skin is destroyed, Allah makes another skin for them so that they perceive the punishment by a fire, indicating knowledge about the nerve endings in the skin, and the verse is as follows:

Those who reject our signs, We shall soon cast into the fire. As often as their skins are roasted through, We shall change them for fresh skins, that they may taste the chastisement. Truly Allah is Exalted in Power, Wise.
(Surah An-Nisa (Chapter 4 – The Women) verse 56)

Dr. Tagatat Tejasen

When asked: So do you agree that this is a reference to the importance of the nerve endings in the skin in sensation, 1400 years ago? Dr. Tejasen responded: “Yes I agree.”

“This knowledge about sensation had been known long before [for Muslims through the Holy Quran], because it says that if somebody does something wrong, then he will be punished by burning his skin and then Allah puts a new skin on him, covers him, to make him know that the test is painful again. That means they knew many years ago that the receptor of pain sensation must be on the skin, so they put a new skin on.”

The skin (see figures below) is the centre of sensitivity to burns. Thus, if the skin is completely burnt by fire, it looses its sensitivity. It is for this reason that Allah will punish the unbelievers on the Day of Judgement by returning to them their skins time after time, as He, the Exalted and Glorified, said in the Quran.

When asked the following question: ‘Is it possible that these verses came to the Prophet Muhammad, (SAAS), from a human source?’ Professor Tejasen conceded that they could have never come from any human source. But he still asked about the source of that knowledge and from where could Muhammad have possibly received it.

He got the reply “From Allah, the Most Glorified and Most Exalted.” Then he asked: “But who is Allah?”

“He is the Creator of all that is in existence. If you find wisdom then it is because it comes only from the one Who is Most Wise. If you find knowledge in the making of this universe, it is because the universe is the creation of the One Who has all the knowledge. If you find perfection in the composition of these creations, then it is proof to you that it is the creation of the One Who Knows Best, and if you find mercy, then this bears witness to the fact that it is the creation of the One Who is Most Merciful. In the same way, if you perceive creation as belonging to one unified order and tied together firmly, then this is proof that it is the creation of the Only Creator, May He be Glorified and Exalted.” was the reply.

Professor Tejasen agreed with what was said to him. He returned to his country where he delivered several lectures about his new knowledge and discoveries. It is learnt that five of his students converted to Islam as a result of these lectures. Then at the Eighth Saudi Medical Conference held in Riyadh, Professor Tejasen attended a series of lectures on Medical signs in the Quran and Sunnah (Saying of the Prophet Muhammad (SAAS)).

Professor Tejasen spent four days with several scholars, Moslems and non-Moslems, talking about this phenomenon in the Quran and the Sunnah. At the end of those sessions Professor Tejasen stood up and said:

“In the last three years I became interested in the Quran, which Shaykh Abdul-Majeed Az-Zindani gave me. Last year, I got Professor Keith Moore’s latest script from the shaykh. He asked me to translate it into the Thai language and to give a few lectures to the Moslems in Thailand. I have fulfilled his request. You can see that in the video tape that I have given to the shaykh as a gift. From my studies and from what I have learned throughout this conference, I believe that everything that has been recorded in the Quran 1400 years ago must be the truth, that can be proven by scientific means. Since the Prophet Mohammad could neither read nor write, Muhammad must be a messenger who relayed this truth which was revealed to him as an enlightenment by the One Who is an eligible Creator. This Creator must be Allah, or God. Therefore, I think this is the time to say ‘Laa ilaaha illAllah’, that there is no god to worship except Allah, ‘Muhammad Rasool Allah’, Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah…”
“I have not only learned from the scientific knowledge in the conference, but also the great chance of meeting many new scientists and making many new friends among the participants. The most precious thing that I have gained by coming to this conference is ‘Laa ilaaha illAllah, Muhammad Rasool Allah’, and to have become a Moslem.”

People used to think that whole the body of the human being is sensitive. They used to think that wherever it is inflicted it will pain; however, as the science of anatomy advanced it realized that not whole human body is sensitive. It discovered that only the skin is the sentries, as shown above. The evidence is that if a person takes a needle and penetrates it into his body he will fuller feel pain only when the needle afflicts it self on and through the skin but when it reaches the flesh inside the body the flesh will not give any sign of pain. When the scientists examined the skin under the microscope they found that the web of the nervous system is an integral fart of the skin. Moreover they found that nerves are of different types. Some of these nerves are sues if we to touch, some are sensitive to pressure, some are sensitive to heat others are sensitive to cold. All these are concentrated with in the layer of human skin. Therefore when unbeliever are thrown into hell on the judge meant day the fire burns him however when their skin get burnt it will be replaced by another new skin, as mentioned by the verse above (4:56).

An important message to you all:
Another thing that I fogot to mention is the stupidity of the creators of the short film called “Fitna” that used this verse to show that the Holy Quran contains and incites violence. Even though they tried to spead their fascism to non-Muslims in Europe it once again didn’t work; now more people are being interested in these kind of scientific verses.
